Without a doubt, BurnAware Free is one of the best freeware burning apps around. It has all the basic features you need for burning, and can easily handle ripping data discs, audio CDs, DVDs, and ISO discs. Beyond that, though, it's a bit light on features.
The main interface is based on the Windows XP Control Panel layout, so it should be instantly recognizable. Under each heading is a link to the control panel for that choice. We were disappointed that drag-and-drop was not available, but the internal system for adding files was not clunky. Audio files get automatically converted from MP3, WMA, or WAV as they're burned to disc. There's also a Tools section, which has two erase modes for rewritables, and a Hardware Info subsection that gives a huge amount of detail on both your hardware's burning abilities and the type of disc in the drive.
Neither pretty nor ugly, BurnAware handles all the major, basic functions you could want a burning app to control, and the price of absolutely zero is absolutely impossible to argue against. Give it a shot.
Publisher's description
From Burnaware Technologies :BurnAware allows you to easily perform the most common disc burning operations: write to all CD/DVD media types, including Blu-Ray (BD-R/BD-RE); create and burn disc images; write multi-session discs; verify the integrity of files; burn your compilations directly on optical media, without having to wait for hard drive staging first and much more. Its proprietary burning algorithm provides the highest level or fault-tolerance, error-free burning and data integrity. BurnAware Free Edition has a modern interface and supports Windows NT/2000/XP and Vista (32 and 64 bit). The application is free and contains absolutely no adware or annoying banners.

Version: BurnAware Free Edition 1.2.8
Pros: Clean interface. Great for burning DVDs of data backups. Starts burning data to DVD almost immediately, reducing total write time to almost half that of other burners I've tried.

Version: BurnAware Free Edition 1.2.8
Pros: easy to use and fast

Version: BurnAware Free Edition 1.2.8
Pros: Doesn't seem to allow aperson to delete the BurnAware folder from the Program Files Folder.
Cons: I thought this software would allow an audio file created with a microphone attached to the computer.

Version: BurnAware Free Edition 1.2.8
Pros: This is the only freebie burner that I could use to copy albeit in a roundabout way (you have to "add files" off the cd/dvd from which you wish to copy). But then you select your burner and away she goes. Plus this dude works in Vista. Plus DVD, Plus ISO, plus erase. But "copy" was #1. All the others put copy in their "deluxe" pay versions. Might as well buy Nero then. I checked about every one of the freeware ones.
Cons: Menu system generic and not very intuitive.

Version: BurnAware Free Edition 1.2.8
"A Great little stand alone. Trim and slim but does what it's supposed to!"
Pros: Burn Aware is good for repetitious jobs, and it's convenient.
Cons: Definetely small feature wise. Way too many things it cannot do.
