Editors' review

Bulk Rename Utility takes the pain out of renaming and managing files and folders, assuming you can get past the frightening user interface. This free application can handle everything from simple search-and-replace to Perl 5 regular expressions, but it suffers from a cluttered user interface that fails to offer tool tips and, somewhat incredibly, abbreviates labels and button names.

The application window offers 13 primary functions, including inserting and appending text, auto-numbering, cropping characters, and moving/copying files. Additional menu bar drop-downs let you set global options, such as time stamp formats, color-coding, and activity logging. Bulk Rename Utility tries to help by offering a comprehensive Help file (although it hardly sets the mind at ease when the Getting Started section starts with DO NOT PANIC!!!! in large red letters). The application also pops Confirmation dialogs by default. But we found that experimentation was the best way to learn the program: The interface displays both the original file name along with what the end product would be if you were to make the changes you have proposed. The target file name is updated as you fill in the application's poorly labeled text fields, drop-down menus, and check boxes, but no changes are made until you click the Rename button.

Bulk Rename Utility provides a great and lightning-fast way to manipulate file and folder names in bulk. Its capability to handle file attributes, metadata, and sophisticated regular expressions make it appropriate for power users as well as those with simpler needs. Unfortunately, its poor interface means that new users will likely lack the fortitude to learn the ins and outs of this program.

"I use this all the time"

    May 19, 2014   |   By XNam360

    Version: Bulk Rename Utility 2.7.1.2

    Pros

I use Bulk Rename Utility all the time to name and organize my massive collections of images, music, etc.

Okay, so the main screen is cluttered... I only ever make use of about half of the stuff on the main screen - I'm not even sure what much of it means, but the features that I do use work very well - that's the important thing.

Frankly, this software is so loaded with features that I'm not even sure that I'll ever need to use; but that's probably a good thing - to know that it's capable of a whole lot more than just what I'm making use of.

    One thing I really like:
The colored preview text makes it very easy to see the difference between the old filename and the new filename. I very much like how it updates instantly right along with me as I'm adjusting the settings - much better than the software I used to use, File Renamer Basic, which didn't show you the preview until you pressed a "preview button" after adjusting all your settings.

    Cons

The cluttered interface of the main screen can be confusing.

And if you try to figure everything out, it's not exactly easy. I thought the HELP should explain everything, but it does a bad job of making itself clear.

For example, some of the sections on the main interface are titled with an abbreviation, such as "RegEx" or "Repl," but nowhere in HELP do the abbreviations "RegEx" or "Repl" appear anywhere! They do not explain their own abbreviations. I had to search through the help for a while before I figured out that they actually stand for "Registry Edit" and "Replace."

So it takes some effort to figure out what everything means (Of course, you don't have to know how everything works in order to use this software, just knowing the basic features are enough for me - I use it all the time, even if I'm not using all the features).

    Summary

I used File Renamer Basic for years, but was very disappointed when it failed to work properly on my new Windows 8 computer...

But I've no reason to be disappointed any longer now that I've found Bulk Rename Utility - this software does everything File Renamer Basic did, does it better, and does more. I've been using it for about a month now and I've been very pleased with it.

    Updated on May 19, 2014

Oops, I made a mistake in my review. "RegEx" stands for "Regular Expression," not Registry Edit.

    "Very powerful."

    July 14, 2013   |   By boblite

    Version: Bulk Rename Utility 2.7.1.2

    Pros

It has the great strength of showing how the filename will change in response to your specifications. I was able to extract the day month and year the picture was taken from the picture files, and to add the extracted date as a prefix in Year Month Day format to all the pictures, which is a great aid in sorting them and grouping them correctly.

    Cons

As mentioned in the CNET review, the interface is initially intimidating. Be prepared to fiddle around for quite a bit of time before attaining any kind of mastery. But in my experience it was worth it, to help tag a huge number of photos with meaningful labels.

    Summary

    Very powerful.

    "Adware attached!!!! Beware!!!"

    June 07, 2013   |   By mdosh01

    Version: Bulk Rename Utility 2.7.1.2

    Pros

    Don't know. Never completed install.

    Cons

I'm usually careful when downloading software, but I trusted CNET. Never more!! I ran the file and all it did was install the Sweetpacks malware!!

I don't know whether to blame CNET or Bulk Rename.

    Summary

DO NOT INSTALL unless you are certain Sweetpacks won't get installed.

"Easiest FOLDER renamer (does files also)"

    September 29, 2012   |   By anthonygeraci

    Version: Bulk Rename Utility 2.7.1.2

    Pros

Easy to rename folder compared to other programs that have better user interface and shortcuts. Simply uncheck the "file" box and leave the "folder" box checked.

    Cons

    Busy and unclear graphic interface.

    Summary

Great for folder batch renaming. Although other programs can do it, renaming them is difficult to figure out. This was easy with Bulk Rename.

    "Request for PFrank Utility Review"

    May 11, 2012   |   By gmitano

    Version: Bulk Rename Utility 2.7.1.2

    Pros

    BRU is endorsed by CNET.

    Cons

CNET list some strange behaviors. PFrank looks much more straightforward, plus seems to have a good scriping interface. Anyone here used it?

    Summary

I've just been upgraded to Win7 and need to port files from my 3 old XP boxes, howewever Win7 doesn't like characters that were fine with XP, e.g., the "Registered" and "Copyrighted" characters and even "-". In researching bulk filename find/replace utilties, I came across PFrank which is an acronym for Peter's Flexible RenAmiNg Kit http://www3.telus.net/pfrank/ . This seemed to me to be possibly better than Bulk-Rename-Utility, so please consider reviewing this PFrank thing. TIAFYH

"Hands down the best file renaming software if..."

    February 27, 2012   |   By shephp01

    Version: Bulk Rename Utility 2.7.1.2

    Pros

Very resourceful features that are laid out in 13 sections that perform different functions such as: Replace characters, change case to upper/lower/sentence/title, change date format, change attributes, remove specific characters or special characters or numbers, etc. It can sort folders/files together and using varying criteria. It can also change file attributes and metadata for music and picture files. Best of all, it previews the changes before you decide to perform the renaming.

    Cons

It is a one-page interface that can be a little cluttered. The higher your screen resolution the better.

    Summary

It helps to know about ASCII. Bulk Rename Utility is quite simply the best and most versatile renaming software available if... you know how to rtfm.
