"Booms Away!"

June 19, 2011  |  By zunipus

 |  Version: Boom 1.1

Pros

At last you are the boss of audio on your entire Mac, from volume to EQ.

Cons

Crashes your user account login. Not good.

Summary

I was sooo pleased to find this hack job of an application existed! I went looking for something like it and found it. I tried the demo. I liked it. I bought it. Now it crashes my user account login. I hate it.

I am in a love/hate relationship with this hacked solution to a problem that should never exist on a Mac in the first place: Getting adequate sound out of the machine.

Background:
I have a MacBook from 2006/11. Apple deliberately and inexplicably hobbled the sound volume. Over the years I've enjoyed forcing the volume to a reasonable level using VLC and other trickery. But I wanted what we all want: Total Control!

Here is Boom (Volume Booster) to the rescue. Except the developer pulled some hacking tricks to get it to work, including the installation of a .KEXT file, something which Apple consistently frowns upon because it potentially forces us all back into the bad-old-days of extension conflicts made infamous in Mac OS 6, 7, 8 & 9. Thankfully, I have rarely had trouble with .KEXT files installed by various applications. But Boom turned out to be an exception. It causes something quite inexplicable: It bombs my entire user account login.

The first sign of impeding BOOM is when the sound on the Mac drops out. For example, I frequently have my Mac verbally read news articles so I can rest my eyes. I hit the key sequence to start the reading but there is silence. I try the keys again. Nothing. I hit the F-key to increase the volume. Nothing. Then kaBOOM! My entire account instantaneously BOMBS. I'm thrown back to the login screen! This bug is entirely reproducible and entirely unique to Boom. Not good!

For all the wonderfulness of Boom, this NASTY bug, until it's fixed, has killed my interest in using Boom except in extreme circumstances. Even then, I highly recommend only booting it manually when you need it, then Quitting it as soon as possible.

Because this is a KEXT file based hack app, this bug may well be due to a KEXT conflict. My best guesses are:
- AmbrosiaAudioSupport.kext used by several Ambrosia apps.
- AudioPCDriver.kext used by Parallels Desktop.
- Any of the five EyeTV kext files
- Soundflower.kext, used by a variety of apps.

I have zero interest in testing which kext is in conflict. Boom loses on my priority list. Once it's Quit, the problem is gone, problem solved.

I hope Boom's developer can better tune it to prevent this bug in the future.

My system: Mac OS X 10.6.7, 3GB of RAM.
