    "Bookend is wonderful"

    May 16, 2004  |   By franksloafoflove

    Version: Bookends 7.7.4

    Summary

    This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
    I was a longtime Endnote user on the PC. It was buggy enough on Windows, but when I switched to the Mac it was just unbearable: data-losing crashes, ridiculously slow, poor support, it just didn't work as advertised. This is even more painful given its monopoly pricing. I can't afford the price to begin with, and I really can't afford to lose paragraphs off my dissertation drafts when I turn on "CYWY."

    Enter Bookends.

    * It's speedy
    * It doesn't crash
    * It has nearly all the features I need (more custom fields are coming soon)
    * It works as advertised
    * The developers are *amazingly* responsive to support questions and feature requests

    Spread the word--it's the only way we're going to break Endnote's virtual monopoly and improve the lives of researchers who need bibliographic software on their Mac.

    "Superb, beats the rest"

    May 12, 2004  |   By jasonkit_dotmac

    Version: Bookends 7.7.4

    Summary

    This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
    I used to use EndNote but the poor interface, general clunkiness and lack of committed Mac-support pushed me to look elsewhere. I also was keen to use my reference software as an index to all the PDFs of papers I hold.

    BookEnds links to files (including PDFs) wonderfully. It's easy to use, very Mac-like and flexible whilst remaining powerful enough for complex referencing. It does the job better than all the other options available for the Mac.

    Additionally support from the developer is fast and friendly. There's lots of commitment to the product as shown by the continual improvements being released on a regular basis. I'm a huge BookEnds fan.

    Powerful and flexible at a reasonable price and backed by brilliant and responsive support after several frustrating grapples with EndNote this is everything you need for referencing.

    "I love Bookends"

    January 12, 2004  |   By sherman1

    Version: Bookends 7.7.3

    Summary

    This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
    Wonderful support, powerful configuration, works with a number of word processors (including the recent great support for Mellel), reasonable cost. It's everything GOOD that Endnote has messed up. Sure, it doesn't have the extensive connection functions that Endnote has, but Reference Miner is turning into a really powerful tool.

    "Superb new version"

    Version: Bookends 7.7

    Summary

    This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
    I wrote to Jon just about six weeks or so ago asking about the possibility of integrating with Mellel. He immediately responded with a "just wait a bit...we're working on this." I also wrote to Mellel about it with my enthusiastic vote for that new wrinkle (see my review under Mellel). This is a wonderful example of excellent Mac software that integrates with another example of committed development to the platform.
    Bookends is fast and easy to navigate. I have a Filter that culls the data from the database at my university's library catalog and dumps into my Bookends. So easily done.
    I once used EndNote but got tired of their ignorance of the Mac platform. Jon responds very quickly to questions and suggestions. If you need a bibliography program this one is absolutely worth investigating and using.

    "Bookends now interacts with Amazon.com!"

    The functionality provided by Reference Miner is something I (and I'm sure others) asked for only a few weeks ago. Thanks for your quick responsiveness to user requests! Further integration with Mellel is also very welcome as Mellel is the up-and-coming Cocoa word processor for OS X. I doubt that EndNote will *ever* integrate with Mellel or Nisus. Bookends keeps getting better and better. I can't recommend it highly enough! Keep up the good work!

    Bookends is wonderful, as always. An excellent alternative to Endnote. What sets this version apart is the integration with Mellel. This is the way reference managers and word processors *should* work together.

    "Who needs EndNote?"

    Version: Bookends 7.6

    Summary

    This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
    I thought I was going to have to spend $$$ to get EndNote so I could import Ebsco CINAHL files. Bookends didn't have one, but just minutes after sending a request for a filter with a sample file, I was sent a filter. What fantastic support! Does everything I needed from EndNote at a third of the cost. Works well with Word X.
