"Wins on features, but UI is confusing"

July 04, 2010  |  By jdtangney

 |  Version: Bookdog 5.3.13

Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I don't use BD very much, but when I do, I rediscover why I keep coming back. It is jam-packed with excellent features. I am not much of a fan of cripple-ware, but BD makes it palatable. I needed to buy a license right in the middle of saving a file. Not a problem. The integrated purchase process (google or paypal) Just Workedâ?¢. BD does all kids of tricks with Delicious as well as with native Safari and Google (I haven't tried Google yet). My only complaint is that the user interface is crowded, verbose and complicated. I keep getting the feeling that I don't know what a particular button does. The long-winded explanations on some dialogs just make it worse. Look at the Preferences: What's up with the funky matrix of text and checkboxes? It looks like a tax return. Given the poor usability, it's not great value for money.

Simply the best there is at what it does in the Mac world. The developer is highly responsive and cool to beat. Don't kid yourself with looks as under the hood beats the heart of Viper V10 ready to get bookmarks sorted in no time and keep them that way!

i say this every year or so. if you run a web browser on a mac, you really should have bookdog, too.

the app and the developer are a stellar examples of what mac shareware and developers can be. right up there with graphicconverter, launchbar, and little snitch in my book. that is: not only essential, but constantly improving.

rock on.

"Great App, Great Customer Support (even when you..."

May 05, 2008  |  By Peakdale

 |  Version: Bookdog 5.1.12

Summary

...don't need it)
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I've been busily getting on with just letting this app get on with its job over the past year, without even thinking about it. I, like most people, have multiple Macs for work and need them all to be up-to-date and then (for me) a job the requires multiple browsers too, that also need to be synced.

Bookdog, working in tandem with dot mac, helps me achieve all this - it's a great app.

This isn't though why I felt the sudden urge, after all this time, to write a review: my mac lap top had to be wiped and in the process of reinstalling everything (don't you hate that bit), I found I'd lost track of my Bookdog serial . . . and low-and-behold (though I later found it) I woke this morning to find an e-mail from the sheepsystems crew with the details I required . . .

Well done guys!

What's new in version 4.0.0

Bookdog 4.0 has the following improvements since Bookdog 3.11.23.

  • Added capability to do Bilateral Migrations, which synchronize missing bookmarks between browsers.
  • Added Automator actions Migrate Unilaterally and Migrate Bilaterally.  (Apple Automator Actions can be scheduled and/or run as part of Automator workflows. Automator is available in Mac OS 10.4 or later.)
  • Configuration and execution of Migrations is now accessible from AppleScript.
  • Option to remove separators from destination during Migration with Merge has been removed.  Instead, separators are intelligently retained depending on the setting of the favor source/destination switch.
  • When migrating and merging, a Firefox "live" bookmark is now recognized as a duplicate when either then RSS URL or regular the URL matches either the RSS or regular URL of an existing bookmark.
  • When migrating from Firefox to Safari or Camino, now puts all items from root (menu) level of Firefox into Bookmarks menu.  The reverse migration can now be performed without any items being moved.
  • Now finds web browsers more reliably, even if their paths have been renamed; will "just work" with any new Firefox beta versions, regardless of the beta version's name.
  • Added options to Skip Fix and Load Anyhow when bookmarks file corruption is discovered.
  • Subject of the Item Details (Inspector) Panel now reliably tracks the selection in the frontmost window, including Fix Duplicates and Fix Broken Bookmark windows.
  • Undo is now available when a Migrations window is active.
  • Improved reliability in Bookdog detecting whether or not Bookwatchdog is running, and vice versa, and in detecting whether or not web browsers are running.
  • Memory is now deallocated more reliably when Main Windows are closed.
  • File path of bookmarks is now shown when cmd-clicking on title bar of Main Window or Verify Report
  • .
  • Fixed bug which sometimes allowed disallowed items to be moved or copied to root level, if they were hidden among other items.
  • When opening a standalone bookmarks file, if the file could not be recognized as the bookmarks of one of the supported web browsers, previous Bookdogs would alert the user but then continue attempting to parse the file, showing additional alerts which were not quite appropriate.  Opening such a file is now aborted after the first alert is shown.
  • Fixed a bug which would cause failure to read Opera bookmarks the next time they were opened in Bookdog, if any bookmark had an empty URL (""), and no other attributes, and if Opera was not used in the meantime.
