"Best free 3D package you can get."
Version: Blender 2.56a
Pros
Expandable with plug-ins, kind community, modeling tools, complete workstation for modeling, animating, video game prototyping, composting and rendering all inside Blender, GNU license allows modification of Blender and all your work is your property
Cons
Poor internal renderer, slow learning curve and somewhat frequent crashes.
Summary
Blender is the absolute best 3D package for the price - nothing.
Blender has a very clean non-overlapping interface that's very easy to operate and work with. The interface can also be adjusted to your liking with a complete theme editor to change the color of the interface.
The internal renderer is a problem, though. It's slow and low-quality. Although this can easily be forgiven for you can easily install a external renderer such as Luxrender (which is GNU free) for much higher quality renders.
Blender's GNU license means that you can modify and release your own version of Blender with no trouble. And thanks to the GNU license all work produced with Blender is solely your property and can be distributed under any terms that you prefer.
This is a software that I highly recommend for anyone interested in 3D graphics and can easily compete with more expensive higher-end 3D suits. This software is very easy to use once learned and can be quite powerful when used correctly. If you don't like the idea of crashes just download the stable version of Blender (2.49b). -
"Powerful Professional level freeware 3D Modeller"
Version: Blender 2.55-beta
Pros
Blender is a freeware application that rivals high end 3D software costing hundreds or even thousands of dollars.
Cons
Not as well known as the Big Name packages, and does not yet have a large selection of prefabbed objects and models.
Summary
Blender is a cross-platform 3D modeller that can be used in versions from Mac OS X, through Windows to various flavors of X86 based Linux, and even a version of Solaris.
The good... gobs of power at an unbeatable price... free.
The bad... Still being developed, so expect some problems with the beta releases. Fortunately, There is always an older stable version available,
The real problem is that although the home site for Blender has a large user community for support and tutorials, there not a lot of prefabbed models available to use. Hopefully someone will start a centralized database of models and objects for Blender users to download.
There is one large problem though here at Download.com... The page here erroneously states that this is an Intel only product. This is not true!
Yes... there is a PPC version of Blender 2.55 beta that also runs under Mac OS X 10.4 listed there for download, and it works just fine.
Go to the home page of Blender and go to the downloads page. Under Mac OS X there are TWO Mac OS X versions listed... an Intel version and a PPC version. The same is true of the beta page.
If you want the PPC version, do NOT use the link listed here at Download.com! Go directly to http://www.blender.org/ and go to the downloads page (downloads is listed at the top of he page...). If you want the older stable version (currently 2.49b), scroll down to the Mac OS X listing and select the PPC version. If you want the current beta (2.55 beta), click on the "get 2.55 beta" choice listed under the big orange Get Bender listing near the to of the page. As with the stable version, scroll down the beta page to the Mac OS X version and select the PPC version of Blender 2.55 beta.

"IT gets 4 stars because it is free and quite Versatile."
Version: Blender 2.49b
Pros
IT is free and its Polar coordinates match those of Second Life Sculpted Prims
Cons
A little hard to understand initially but considering it is free, it is a great tool, and i have both maya Infinite and Cinema 4D Studio.
Very handy tool for those less complex creationsSummary
How can you dislike something free, especially when you consider the work that goes into producing software in the first place.
IT really should get 5 stars but it is not complete yet. and 5 Stars is hard to come by and or should be, I have never found a perfect Application (Programme) Yet -

World's Worst Interface! They even admit it and attempt to justify it by saying that this was originally an in-house application. Regardless of its origins, I spent 2 hours trying to put 1 cube on top of another. I was unable to do it. What good is a mountain of features if you can't get to the mountain? This ap is NOT for public use, but only for those that have played with Blender since the v0.0.1 days and have a grasp of their counter-intuitive user interface. I think I could have placed 2 cubes together much easier and faster using Unix coding while drunk. -

Just did a fresh download to try and compare to Sphera3D (BTW: very confusing links in this entry about blender.com and blender3d.org) - opens a Window, shows the menu bar and crashes on OS X 10.3.3... -

First try and change your Moniter res to Thousands. That should fix the weird drawing of the screen. Other that , the program is okay for free. It could be better. But it can make some nice results. Like HAir and fur. HDRI, GI, no cloth yet. And the game engine is dead for now but other than that it is nice for free. -
