If you've ever thought about making professional-quality animations but decided not to because of the cost of the software, your excuse just got up and walked out the door. Blender is a free, open-source 3D rendering program that puts the power of the medium back into the hands of the artist.

Blender features a laundry list of animation essentials that can be broken down into categories: Interface, Modeling, Rigging, Rendering, Animation, UV Unwrapping, Shading, Physics and Particles, Imaging and Compositing, and Real Time 3D/Game Creation. The interface, though loaded with complicated tools, is remarkable for neither obscuring nor interfering with the image being worked on. A brief sampling of tools and functions includes 3D paint for vertex weighing, polygon meshes, 2D and 3D procedural brushes, edge rendering, textures, collision simulation, and support for around two dozen 2D and 3D file formats. Extras can be added with Python scripting, and since it's open source, many scripts can be easily found for download in the user forums.

Blender is not for the faint of heart. Learning to use it is time-consuming and best done by following the detailed tutorials available on the Blender Web site. There is also an extensive online Blender community, making familiarization with the app less painful--if not pain-free. However, none of these detracts from the overall experience or usefulness of the program, and we strongly recommend it for advanced users.

"Blender: The Hidden Surface"

May 16, 2007  |  By genotypewriter

 |  Version: Blender 2.44

Pros

Blender has a lot of features and it's free but one of its best known facts is its steep learning-curve. As usual, there's more to Blender than what most people see...

Being in the field of education and having been a student, I know how hard it is for emerging educational institutions to budget licenses for expensive high-end professional software. In the rapidly moving (no pun) field of 3D animation, this is an even bigger problem when having to invest such large amounts of money to purchase packages such as Maya (single retail $7000 on 16/5/2007) for large numbers of students when new versions get released very quickly. In some parts of the world, the course fee can be many times cheaper than the license of the software itself.

With open-source digital art packages like Blender, artistic freedom can finally reach everyone. Now the competition need not only be between the rich. This is also good news for commercial application developers as now there are lesser reasons for people to pirate their software and there is potential for a growth in the industry. Open-source still has an advantage even if commercial software is available for free since the GNU GPL makes the source code available to everyone so people can become developers of such powerful software instead of just being users.

Cons

Nothing is perfect

"It's more user friendly than I expected."

September 14, 2007  |  By hgranvil

 |  Version: Blender 2.44

Pros

It has the power of all the CADD programs I've ever used with a much shorter learning curve.

Cons

I haven't been able to open any help files. No biggie...

"Blender is great!"

September 11, 2007  |  By Whazzap Doc

 |  Version: Blender 2.44

Pros

Go ahead and hunt yourself stupid for a great, free and well loved 3D graphics program with tons of support and advice. You will not find something like Blender. If you need help, simply go to the Blender site or the forums at Secondlife, who recommend the program for 3D graphics creation in the Secondlife environment.

Cons

It has, as many have said, a steep learning curve.

Yet, if you take the time and do everything step by step, you will within a week to a month, depending on how much time per day you spend using it, find yourself in the enviable position of being able to make a great deal of money from something you really enjoy doing.

"Wow - I'm completely new to this stuff, but WOOOOOWWWW!"

August 30, 2007  |  By sam521

 |  Version: Blender 2.44

Pros

This software can make 3D video games, films, and still pictures with amazing graphics. It has the potential to make whatever 3D idea you have in your head a reality! And, IT'S FREE!

If you don't believe it's amazing graphics just buy reading this review, drop by blender.org and view the gallery - they even have a feature length DVD a group of people made together with blender that you can order.

Cons

All 3D modeling software is not for the faint of heart. If you're new to it, be prepared to spend some time reading and watching internet tutorials, or you can buy a book. The layout may be intimidating, but if you're driven, it's completely worth it.

"Need to be the right kind of user"

August 23, 2007  |  By Wild Eep

 |  Version: Blender 2.44

Pros

It is incredibly full-functioned. I can use this as a Match mover, an animator (2D and 3D), a video editor, a game maker, and a python programming line in a single suite.

It's free, that's always a plus (see above)

I felt very up-to the steep learning curve.

Cons

If you're just at the point where you're a professional animator, you'd be using a professional tool. If you're just too far under the line of being a professional, you give up after having no idea what the locrotscale or texface button is. It is open source, so give the creators a break, they work so hard on giving the program functionality, there isn't a whole lot of time for the release to be made into an aqua-simple interface.

Blender can really be a test of persistence. Use as many tutorials as you can find, or you will fail. It comes unsurprisingly then, that there are a number of kids who use the program better than some adults.

Stay with it, don't give up, and it gets a lot easier. The learning curve is a turn off.

"Looks cool but I'm confused...."

August 21, 2007  |  By RevolutionaryJM

 |  Version: Blender 2.44

Pros

Just looking at the interface makes it look professional and if I had the knowledge I could probably use this to all of its capabilities.

Cons

Unfortunately I don't understand it and the tutorials aren't working. Could anyone help me as much as possible or make youtube tutorials?
