    "SPAMWARE!!!!"

    July 27, 2012  |   By felisgris

    Pros

Bitdefender is undoubtedly one of the most potent antivirus programs out there. It has a clean, easy-to-use interface, excellent detection and firewall, and rates among the highest both for detection and removal, ranking almost with Malwarebytes for removal and with Norton, McAfee, Kaspersky and F-prot for detection. Please note I am using 2012 version. Cnet search does not allow me to find a 2012 page for review, but directs me to the sponsored result for 2013.

    Cons

I will not be using this program again for the following reasons.
    1) SPAM!!!! About three months ago, with six months still left to run, this app started sending pop-up on-top ads urging me to upgrade to 2013, disrupting music recording and causing me to have to re-start games. So far it has sent about 12 ads. My complaints to Bitdefender were ignored. The upgrade price is much higher than the street price and in any case my bank offers it free. NO other program has ever used this intrusive and unwanted advertising.
    2) NOT COMPATIBLE WITH OPERA and probably not with Orbit Downloader. It is also not compatible with Malwarebytes. These are 'killer apps'. That is, there is nothing that rivals Orbit and for me nothing that rivals the superior functionality of Opera. Antivirus manufacturers must realise they have many rivals. They can be replaced; programs like Opera and Orbit can't.
    3) TOO AGGRESSIVE deletes files that I want to run sandboxed.

    Summary

The manufacturers of this program seem to believe they have a right to do what they want with your computer. They send pop-up spam. The program clashes with other programs. It appears to slow down internet traffic significantly. I engaged in several four-hour discussions with my ISP but believe Bitdefender is part of the problem. I found it impossible to get it to network my home computers together. Reviews say it is extremely difficult to uninstall.

I am the tech manager at work and have computers running Comodo, Avira and AVG free. These computers all network together freely. Orbit and Opera work perfectly on them and internet speed is good. However when I run virus scans on them using Malwarebytes, only the AVG computers were consistently virus free. At home I have Bitdefender on all three computers. I've just bought a new computer and there is NO WAY that I will be installing Bitdefender on it.

I have only received two email notices from Bit Defender about the upgrade. No pop-ups at all. Hmmm.
