    "Do Not Use! Dangerous."

    April 15, 2014   |   By rpcohen

    Version: Bitdefender Antivirus Free 1.0.20.1083

    Pros

You don't have to download and install it and there are good alternatives available.

    Cons

The free version has a number of problems but the most serious is that it will not let you restore an item placed in quarantine back to working order. It has a restore button next to each quarantined item but the button doesn't do anything in the free version. Instead, you will be forced to purchase the paid-for version in order to restore the files. If the quarantined item happens to be important to your system then you're basically screwed. There are ways to manually restore the quarantined files via Safe Mode but that's not a solution at all for most users.

    Summary

Avoid this software. It can critically damage your system and force you to purchase the full version in order to fix the damage it causes.

"Just not good enough in its current state"

    March 30, 2014   |   By Scree

    Version: Bitdefender Antivirus Free 1.0.20.1083

    Pros

    - Famous Bitdefender top protection for free
    - Supposedly "lightest" AV ever made
    - Uses 64-bit processes unlike most other AVs
    - Truly set and forget (to a fault)

    Cons

    - Small but ugly UI window
    - Cannot add exclusions until "too late"
    - No tweak settings whatsoever
    - Tends to freeze/crash too often

    Summary

This AV sounded great at first, but it has too many strikes against it in its current state. And maybe this AV is the "lightest" one around in terms of system performance, but that seems to come at the expense of it using over 200MB of non-paged kernel ram (other AVs never go that high that I've seen).

    "Good Free Product"

    March 20, 2014   |   By TimidCat

    Version: Bitdefender Antivirus Free 1.0.20.1083

    Pros

Lightweight - Does not affect the system speed in anyway.
Detection Rate - Found a few Malware that my old AV(Avast) did not.
Simple Clean Interface - Simple design. No unnecessary button.
Silent - Protects you silently in the background with no interruption.

    Cons

    Not many customization.
    Very little feature.
    Cannot Schedule scans.

    Summary

This AV silently and unobtrusively protect you from virus while you enjoy your PC without worrying about any kind of virus. On the other hand, the simple and easy to use interface comes with the cost of functions and settings. This software is good for users who just want a nice, safe protection for their system without having to fuss over the settings, although, this AV is not recommended for sophisticated users who likes adjustable and customizable software.

"Stay Away if Running Windows XP"

    March 15, 2014   |   By Pronounce

    Version: Bitdefender Antivirus Free 1.0.20.1083

    Pros

    Supposedly good virus detection.

    Cons

Requires .NET, which must be removed from Windows XP due to many exploits and MS not supporting Windows XP.

    Summary

Windows XP will not be updated past April 8, 2014. Since BitDefender Free installs .NET you're just asking for viruses after 4-8-14. Note: MS patches .NET all the time, due to it's large virus attack surface.

    "Dont even try. Horrible!"

    March 13, 2014   |   By duayres

    Version: Bitdefender Antivirus Free 1.0.20.1083

    Pros

    Free, maybe?

    Cons

Low detection rate, ALWAYS ask for reboot even if the object isn't on memory, and FREEZES A LOT. Crash. CRASH CRASH!! I can terminate all te related processess with the taskmanager. The interface is very UNINTUITIVE, and have nothing compared with the other AVs rivals.

    Summary

Use HATASHAWINWATHEVER antivirus alike and you will do a better choice than this #$%&.

    Summary

So far I installed this product to 9 computers and they are very clean and full-functioning to their maximum capabilities. I can confidently put it to the test on my own risk visiting virus website, which eventually blocked by this product. So light that you will forget it. You just have to log-in using your facebook account(not hard to do) to make the product free forever. The support system is very straightforward and makes you feel they really care. Hey, it's number 1!!!!

    Updated on Mar 3, 2014

As not to confuse the average users, every computer has already a firewall. You just need a best antivirus tested worldwide. If you are confused how best it is, just try it for free and if you don't like it then you can instantly change to other av's. That's how simple bitdefender is. Be safe, people.

Seems very light. Do not notice much lag at all. You don't even know it's there.

    Cons

Very basic. Not full of features.

I have been a big fan of Avast for years, but after the upgrade to Windows 8.1, it slowed my Dell laptop quite a bit. This is a big improvement!

    "Unintuitive, resource hog...stay away..."

    October 20, 2013   |   By PrashantGogoi

    Version: Bitdefender Antivirus Free 1.0.20.1083

    Pros

    - Famed engine

    Cons

    - Unintuitive
    - Resource hog
    - Cannot define white listed files
    - Insufficient options

    Summary

Installed BitDefender recently as I had heard so much about it. Smooth installation and a very good looking UI. I had a keylogger installed for monitoring purposes and as suspected, it was caught and quarantined by BitDefender. So, I went to exclude it from the quarantine as I do with any other security program on my system so that the keylogger can run. But it was not removed from the quarantine though it was marked as excluded. Tried restarting, updating definations but I was still unable to run the keylogger. Thought of adding it to the White List but surprisingly there was no option to define 'safe' files. Ultimately, I had to uninstall it as I needed the keylogger more.
There were 2 other reasons for doing so. Firstly, it is a serious resource hog. Even if you are not running a scan, it slows everything else down. And if you run a scan, don't even think of even moving the mouse. Secondly, it is almost like there is an utter disdain in providing information to the user. The UI looks great but it is totally unintuitive. BitDefender informed me that it has quarantined certain suspicious files and needed a restart to clean them. And it did clean the files after restart. But it NEVER informed me which files were deleted; neither during detection nor after deletion. I frantically searched BitDefender for logs/messages telling me which files were deleted but found nothing. And this lack of information is all over the program as if to say that I did not deserve this information.
BitDefender might be an 'Award winning', 'Top performing' anti virus program but is definitely at the bottom of my list. I would advise users to stay away from this one unless you don't care what is deleted from your systems...
