"open source Master of Monsters"
Version: Battle For Wesnoth 0.7.1
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
There was a console game about 15 years ago called Master of Monsters. fantasy TBS. hex map with terrain tiles. You play a leader who summons critters (elves, wizards, trolls, etc) to fight for you. Critters gain experience and progress to stronger forms. If this sounds fun to you, Wesnoth does it quite well.
Not commercial quality, but damn good considering it's 100% free. -
"darn fast"

This is the fastest version I've ever seen. I've played 4 levels in version 0.7 and they all ran fast. No complaints. -
"speed varies"
Version: Battle For Wesnoth 0.6.99.4
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I tried the Necromancer campaign yesterday and it was real slow. Tried out the Konrad campaign today and the speed varies. Maybe it's because I have a G4/400, but it's probably b/c the game is still in beta. I've been following this game for a few months now, and the new additions (units, levels, graphic details) are great. It's definitely a keeper once this reaches 1.0. Until then, you should definitely give the game a try. -

The story is great and the depth involved with different units having certain strengths is admirable...i recomend it to anyone who can have fun without high polygon counts and eyecandy -
"It's quite nice"
Version: Battle For Wesnoth 0.6.1

This is pretty impressive for a freeware game. It also runs without any problem in OSX 1.5. Any additional improvements from the author would only be icing on the cake. -

Cute turn-based tactical game in the tradition of Strategic Conquest, with quality comparable to FreeCiv. -
"way to go"
Version: Battle For Wesnoth 0.5.2cvs
Summary

This fixes all the glitches that bugged me with the previous 0.5 version. The AI seems a bit tougher though, which isn't a bad thing. I love the unit experience level aspect. Keep up the good work, people. -
"A lot of potential..."
Version: Battle For Wesnoth 0.5
Summary

Some interface and performance issues aside, Wesnoth has the makings of a nice tactics game in the Ogre Battle genre. One of the better open source productions, with a nice-looking tileset and decent game dynamics already in place. -
"Good Improvement, small glitches"
Version: Battle For Wesnoth 0.5
Summary
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
This seems like a major overhaul over the previous version. The AI is much better optimized (thinks faster) and everything else is much faster. There is a small, though prominent, glitch. The middle panel on the right that shows the # of turns, gold inventory, income, etc. does not display properly. Instead the information is replaced with "...". Moving the mouse cursor over the dots do show the information, but that is a huge hassel. Also, on ocassion, the unit information (bottom right panel) disappears and is replaced with the dots as well. However, this is easily remedied by (re)clicking on a unit. Even though the dot problems are there, the speed improvements on this version are worth putting up with the glitch. -
