Editors' review

Batteries are laptops' Achilles' heels. Many mobile users have been let down by their battery meters, too, which can misjudge or misrepresent how much charge is actually left in your battery. The shortcomings of the built-in Windows meter lead to free tools like BatteryCare. It's a simple utility that displays your laptop battery's status and capacity and the time remaining in its discharge cycle. It monitors and displays CPU and HDD temperatures, too.

BatteryCare has a small but attractive interface that offers a lot more information than the built-in Windows tool, or many other battery meters we've seen, for that matter, with tabs for Basic and Detailed Information; the latter includes entries for battery model, designed capacity, wear level, and more. A system tray icon lets users display and hide the interface and access not only the program's options but also Power Settings and Power Plans. Hovering the cursor over the icon called up a semitransparent window showing battery status and charge but also the temperature of our CPU and primary hard disk drive. BatteryCare has a lot of settings for a simple tool, especially in the Notifications section, which includes not only full, low, and critical battery level warnings but also a configurable remaining time warning and a unique option to configure a warning to replace the battery after a certain number of discharge cycles, which can head off trouble before it catches up to you "in the field." The Power Plans section included selections for running on batteries and plugged in to AC power, as well as an automatic option. The Advanced section showed usage statistics as well as an option of particular interest to Vista users: the ability to run at startup in Administrator mode, which enables temperature monitoring and service pausing even when the bothersome User Account Control is active.

If you rely on your laptop's batteries, we highly recommend a good battery meter like BatteryCare. Even if your laptop stays tethered to a wall wart, though, it can help you ensure that your battery is ready to go, when and if you need it.

    "Great App When Installed Carefully"

    April 08, 2014   |   By erikshep

    Version: BatteryCare 0.9.13

    Pros

    -Free
    -Accurately predicts remaining battery life
    -Clean interface
    -Best battery monitor encountered

    Cons

-WARNING - Will try to install a mountain of manure. This is why I rated it four stars instead of five.

Why four stars considering the amount of manure? I have installed over a dozen battery monitors and this is the best one by far. Also, it is not that difficult to install it free of the manure. If there was a comparable open source application, I would one star this and point people in that direction.

-The interface could be a little more attractive. If applications were personified, I would not find this one remotely physically attractive.

    Summary

Great application - use extreme CAUTION when installing to avoid manure. I made a CNET account just to write this review. All the negative reviews seemed silly considering you can avoid all the manure by simply reading during installation. Why would anyone write a review that only highlights their own ineptitude? (Rhetorical snide remark)

"Useless POS. Also tries to install 5 adware programs."

    February 06, 2014   |   By DS146

    Version: BatteryCare 0.9.13

    Pros

Whoever CNET Editor "Dan Russell" is, he should never again be allowed to review any software. Period.

This is a useless P.o.S. software. Do NOT install it. It does absolutely nothing useful that you can't already do just by double-clicking on your battery icon. And it uses very deceptive ways to try and get you to install 5 unrelated adware programs, repeatedly. It tries to set itself up with auto-start, auto-update, and other memory hogs.

Many of the positive user-reviews are obvious fakes. Years ago CNET was reputable, but they've obviously been taken over by MBAs who are trying to squeeze every last penny for their division. Yuck!

In short: STAY AWAY AT ALL COSTS!!!

    Cons

Um, see "Pros", above. If those are the 'pros', then take a guess about the Cons.

STAY AWAY! DO NOT DOWNLOAD THIS SOFTWARE!

    Summary

Useless. Tries to install adware. Memory hog. Deceptive. STAY AWAY!

"DON'T DOWNLOAD. ITS CNET Malware Non Function Rubbish"

    December 02, 2013   |   By skyblue_cnet

    Version: BatteryCare 0.9.13

    Pros

NIL. IT FORCED ME TO SIGN UP CNET TO WRITE THIS REVIEW!!!

    Cons

It cheat you into installing many malwares, even if you carefully decline all, upon complete installation and launch, it will direct you to its Website asking for donation. Then it asked you to update new version, restart the entire Malwares installation to cheat you again. If you skillfully decline all malwares, it direct you to donation asking again. That is all you get, nothing else. The program won't run anything, its a dead one. Wasting all your time to install and uninstall.

    Summary

A utter rubbish and malware that make CNET Download no longer trustable!!!

    "MALWARE ALERT"

    November 07, 2013   |   By mattg8179

    Version: BatteryCare 0.9.13

    Pros

Avoid - full of malware, as others have said.

    Cons

    Full of malware:
    - Installed toolbars into all my browsers.
    - Installed background update service.
    - Installed backgroup backup service.
    - Changed the home pages in all my browsers.

    Summary

Keep away, just because of the malware. Have uninstalled and removed the other changes I could find, but not sure yet if I've found them all. And the software itself doesn't actually appear to be that useful.

    Updated on Nov 7, 2013

Update to my review: I don't know if it contains viruses as others have stated - at least I've not noticed anything yet.

But the Malware was really hard to remove, especially from Internet Explorer (Firefox and Chrome were much easier). I didn't manage to do it manually, but downloaded a tool called AdwCleaner that did most of the job. I know, I know - downloading a second piece of free software to remove the effects of the first seems like a really bad idea, but my system does now appear to be clean.

Do use AdwCleaner with care though. It looks like a really powerful tool, and there were some reports of users finding it had deleted things they wanted to keep (I didn't though). I think the key is to let it make a report about what it's found and reviewing that before letting it loose.

    Good luck,
    MattG8179.

    "Excellent utility for laptops"

    October 07, 2013   |   By tencv1

    Version: BatteryCare 0.9.13

    Pros

this is a really good program that has helped me conserve a battery on its last legs. the settings are clear and easy to use.

    Cons

there ARE several add-ons that the installer wants to install-- BUT if you are careful and click DECLINE or UNCHECK specific boxes, this will be a clean install of a very nifty useful program.

    Summary

the people here who have given this 1 star only have themselves to blame. if you can read and take your time to look at each step in the install process, you will be rewarded. just remember to click DECLINE for each of a sequence of offers during the install....

"Open candy is malware and virus"

    September 28, 2013   |   By obertscloud

    Version: BatteryCare 0.9.13

    Pros

there are no pros to this program, unless they remove the open candy malware then it would be a pro

    Cons

This EULA states thy have right to install malware on your pc. Althought Open candy says it is not virus, it is malware, it takes over your computer for ads and starts processes in the background, I tested the program with 10 of the top virus and malware systems, all advise to block this, do not install, unless you want problems, you could make a system restore point, and drive image backup before you try it if you disregard this alert, that is the only way to get back to a safe system, complety formating your harddrive and reinstalling os and image of secure system.

    Summary

I tested this on three dummy pc's all infected with viruses and malware after I installed..

"Fantastic software, surprised it has critics!"

    August 05, 2013   |   By akinlo

    Version: BatteryCare 0.9.13

    Pros

Does what it claims it can do: accurately measure battery level, notifies you when to calibrate battery for improved battery life, can be set to automatically switch between high performance (when you're plugged in) and power saver (when on battery power), this prolongs how long you can use your laptop without worrying about manually changing settings all the time!

    Cons

Yet to find any! Who says it installs malware? it's your responsibility to reject offers to install toolbars during installation. Almost all software (including paid antivirus from big players!) bundle toolbar and other malwares into their products nowadays, just shine your eyes during every installation - the option to decline is ALWAYS provided and Battery Care is no exception.

    Summary

After using on two different laptops for about a year now, I have no complaints, simply delighted such a quality product remains free!

    July 19, 2013   |   By huntm856

    Version: BatteryCare 0.9.13

    Pros

    Seems ok but...

    Cons

...as I said, it sneak-installs a 'toolbar' at first launch. Immediately uninstalled it after I saw this.
