Though it's not licensed by Major League Baseball, Baseball Superstars manages to be a fun, arcade type of baseball game--even without the big-name players. With cartoon-like graphics, you can play a single game, a 32-game season, or a Home run derby. There is a mission-based mode, and a My League mode, in which you can level-up a pitcher or a batter over the course of a season. There are 10 teams to choose from each with varying strengths and weaknesses. Both batting and pitching takes some practice (especially with the wide variety of pitches available), but the game is surprisingly realistic during the pitching and hitting portions of the game. You have no control over fielders except for infield throws, and your teammates automatically run down pop flies and base hits.
Even without complete control over your players, Baseball Superstars is very enjoyable. The My League mode is a great pick-up-and-play option, because as a batter you only play the parts of the game when you're at bat. In between games, you'll get a chance to train on various skills and buy items that will improve your abilities. With all this depth across several game types, Baseball Superstars is a great game for any baseball fan--even without the MLB players.
