BS.Player is a free video and media player that's been around in several versions for some time. It's a capable tool with lots of options and some useful specializations, such as automatically scanning your system for missing codecs and downloading and installing them. It's got some clunkiness, though, and it displays a nag message overlay when you play videos. It's only on the screen for a few seconds (though it seems longer) but all it does is tell you that BS.Player is free for noncommercial use.

BS.Player's installer has several options, including associating supported media files, which we declined. But it also scanned our system and identified a number of necessary and recommended codecs and offered to install them, which we accepted. These are familiar freeware media codecs like Haali Media Splitter. BS.Player splits its interface into two parts: a control panel and a video window. The compact console has the usual controls and displays (title, timer, etc.) plus a right-side menu with expandable controls for configuring and playing Video, DVD, Audio, Radio, and TV. A Menu next to the Minimize button opened an extensive file of commands, options, and features, including FAQs, a wiki, a forum, and updates, but no manual or Help file. You can reskin the console, too. We previewed the available skins but found them like the main theme, a bit garish and with styling cues taken from game controllers.

BS.Player can play just about anything, though that's also true of its principle competitors, which also rival it in options (and beat it soundly in looks). But BS.Player isn't particularly intuitive, either; for instance, when our first video finished playing, we looked around for a way to close the video screen before finally resorting to the menu. An autohiding Exit button on the window or a Close File button on the console would be welcome additions. But, bottom line: a free video player that plasters its so-called freeness over your video in an onscreen message you can't defeat isn't free in our book, or worth our time -- not with so many excellent free media players a click away.

"Full of SPAM"

September 13, 2013  |  By BrendaMarciana

 |  Version: BS.Player 2.40.997

Pros

It was a great video player in the past and still run all kind of formats or codecs.

Cons

Have spam. I'm not a computer expert but a simple user. However I've noticed that the new version (Free) have many adds, and my computer is running slower. Also is not working properly on Windows 7.

Summary

I believe that, having added all those unwanted advertising banners Etc. surely in order to make money, they forgot to take care of the service for the user. In a few words, a good player ruined by spam, crashes and crap. I'm guessing... for the advertising and stuff

"It's not the best"

May 31, 2009  |  By Stereo_1999

 |  Version: BS.Player 2.40.997

Pros

It worked on windows 7(of coarse so does the new vlc)
It doesn't have spyware, malware, or a virus like others have posted

Cons

It has a pro version which means every time you start a video you get a disclaimer stating you cant use this product for commercial use which is really annoying
The picture quality doesn't seem as good compared to other players

Summary

The only reason i tried this is because kmplayer(my favorite player) doesn't work on windows 7 yet and the bsplayer was a huge disappointment. The default rendering engine did not work with Aero making me change it right away which is a pain.
Also unless you want it to install bsbar, change your homepage, and change your search you have to unclick these annoying default settings.
I hate it when programs want to install other programs by default.
If you want a good player go with kmplayer or vlc media player(like stated above kmplayer wont work for windows 7 rc yet)

May 25, 2009  |  By M-M-Z

 |  Version: BS.Player 2.40.997

Pros

Light weight, plays everyting, it downloads subtitles for movie automatically

Cons

Sometimes it gets crashy. Will change your home page in browser and add a toolbar, unless you deselect them in installation process

Summary

Neat little player, which will play every file, even those difficult m2ts AVCHD videos from my digital camcorder - my default multimedia player for all of my video files!

"***RUINS COMPUTERS! MALWARE ADDED AFTER CNET REVIEW!***"

May 24, 2009  |  By 47josecnet

 |  Version: BS.Player 2.40.997

Pros

NOTHING!!!! IT HAS RUINED MY COMPUTER! I HAVE WASTED 25 HOURS TRYING TO GET MY MACHINE TO WORK PROPERLY. NOTHING HELPS. NOT ANTISPYWARE, ANTIVIRUS, REGEDIT, FIREWALLS, UTILITY PROGRAMS, NET RESEARCH. 'Tech Support" is a TRAP. Un+reinstall USELESS

Cons

1ST, read the "Pros" comments I wrote; they are precursors to these: B.S. Player hijacks and infects your browser. When you type in a URL in the address bar, you go to B.S. Player's search engine, not your chosen one...then YOUR COMPUTER FREEZES,

Summary

CNET got PLAYED by these con men.
. After CNET reviewed this malware, B.S. Player changed the code. As detailed earlier, B.S. Player will hijack your browser and your computer will FREEZE every single time you go to every single web page...or even try to scroll down. There is no way to uninstall its browser hijack. B.S. Player's website
a) refuses to offer a true uninstaller
b) refers readers to its forums...in which any hacker can plant malware links while pretending to help
c) leaves false advice in those forums.
B.S. Player keeps claiming that you need only uninstall it, then re-install, and say you don't want B.S. Player in any default during the reinstall. LIARS!
You cannot proceed with the rest of the install without doing so, and they know it!
After you DE-select B.S.Player defaults and attempt to proceed with the install, you have to click on an empty dot that un-does all the decisions you just made.
In other words, the next thing B.S.Player says is that you are agreeing to set B.S. Player in the ways you just tried to block it.
I have wasted twenty-five hours trying to clean up this mess, and failed to finish my projects at work, too, because I trusted CNET's review of this malware. . There is nothing to do but reset my computer to a point two weeks in the past and lose all the work I did since installing this B.S. Player infection.
B.S. Player is POISON. B.S. Player is DEATH. B.S. Player is a VIRUS.
And, since you are no doubt wondering, Yes. I do run good antivirus, antispyware, firewall programs which are constantly updated, and defrag, and clean up my registry. Yes, I uninstalled and re-downloaded Firefox. Yes, I went through all the possible settings in Tools et al within Firefox, and everywhere else, in all Settings Functions, everywhere on my machine.
Since installing this malware, my net speed is down 95%. If you infect your machine with B.S. Player, your net speed will be down 95%, too.

"Can't get rid of it completely"

May 12, 2009  |  By routzahn

 |  Version: BS.Player 2.40.997

Pros

Frankly, I didn't keep it around long enough to find any pros. The interface was a bit funky for my taste, as was the annoying search page is automatically defaults to.

Cons

Annoying search-type page comes up when typing in an incomplete URL into my browser's address bar. Type in CNET and this is what you get: http://search.conduit.com/ResultsExt.aspx?ctid=CT1750559&q=cnet. Can't figure how to get rid of it either.

Summary

If you don't mind the very-annoying BS search page coming up constantly and the unnecessary "funkiness" of this player interface, you'll be all set. I don't care for either one, so that's why I don't have any use for it. A player that, even when removed from my computer, continues to hang on with a search page is just too much BS for me.

"The piece of software is good for me"

May 09, 2009  |  By Felix Raduica

 |  Version: BS.Player 2.40.997

Pros

I like the ease of use and the user friendly interface.

Cons

I don't like the themes the standard version offers, I have to do a search on Google to find some nice themes.

Summary

It seems like the player is easy to use and has many settings and you can set them to your likings.
