"BRU LE not for simple backups"

September 18, 2006  |  By mightyviking--2008

 |  Version: BRU LE 1.2.8

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I've been using v1.2.8 for a couple of weeks now with an Exabyte Magnum 1x7 LTO-3 tape library to back up an Xserve and Xserve RAID. It was not as intuitive as I had hoped, but phone support has been excellent. They walked me through some minor issues that I had trouble with and the software runs great. There are some features that I'd like to see included in future updates or upgrades though. For Mac users, I would recommend this software if your need requires control of a tape library device or even a stand-alone tape drive. For bootable drive backups, I use Super Duper! and am very pleased with that as well. tmv

Full Specifications

What's new in version 1.1.1
  • UI now allows you to resize the listboxes on the Backup, Restore, and Verify panels in relationship to one another to improve the viewing of the data presented.

  • Importing unknown tapes has been changed. The import process now only works with standalone tape drives (even if they are within a library). To import an unknown tape, select the tape drive that you will be using and load the tape to be imported into the drive. Once the tape is ready, use the "Import Unknown Tape" radio button on the Verify panel and click "Verify". The import progress will be displayed. To see the imported catalogs, simply change to the Restore panel.

  • Fixed an issue where electing to restore an entire volume as the first operation after BRU is loaded resulted in an un-killable process that doesn't start the restore.

  • Improved working with file-based archives.

  • Sped up populating the catalogs for restore from a file-based archive. This performance improvement should be between 25% to 75% depending upon the number of files in a given archive rather than being dependent upon the size of the archive.

  • Added drag-and-drop support to the main application. If you drop a recognized BRU archive file (must have an extension of .bru) BRU will automatically start and take you to the restore panel with the dropped file prepared for restore.

  • While running the BRU application, if you drop a BRU archive from the Finder onto the Restore panel's "Content" listbox or the "Open Archive File" editfield, the file will be processed as if you had selected it from the "Open Archive File" mechanism.

  • While running the BRU application, If you drop a BRU archive from the Finder onto the Verify panel's Descrepancies listbox or the filename editfield, you will be able to verify the contents of the dropped file.

  • Added new BRUTalk application. This enables standalone drive users whose scheduled, background backups exceed the capacity of a tape to connect to the background BRU process and manage a tape change instead of aborting the backup as in previous versions.

To use this feature, when saving a Tape Drive scheduled backup (in difference to a library scheduled backup), be sure to check the "Enable BRUTalk Communication" checkbox. If the backup exceeds the capacity of a single tape, you can execute the BRUTalk application and respond to the prompts. Refer to Chapter 11 (-I option) and Appendix H for more information.
