"Unfinished beta, annoying trialware, - expensive"
Version: BIAS Peak 4.0
Summary

Annoying "reminders" pop up whenever you open the trialware and everytime you try to save a file. I know it's free. I know BIAS, it's only a 14 day trial, just as well, 'cause I would buy this software for the price you're asking. Fix it first, then I wil consider it. The app. still doesn't clean up after itself (just as in version 3.2 for OSX) and leaves megabytes of "PeaksaveTEMP" files on my drive that I have to trash manually (if I find them). Speed has been improved through overall. GUI sucks!!! Preferences pane implementation is a casebook study in HOW NOT TO DESIGN an interface. Color preferences implementation is and has always been (for years) a geek programmer's idea of how to set color prefrences for the GUI. Hire a GUI designer and a usability designer, hell for the cost of this 2 tracks sound editing software you could certainly afford one or two! Overall this update is speedier then previous versions, but a huge minus in terms of GUI and the lack of multitrack capability, at least they could have given us 4 or 6 tracks to work with! -

...but it still feels really sloppy. There are a *lot* of graphic glitches going on. Everything flickers whenever you resize a window. This feels like very early beta software in that regard, but happily, the audio recording and playback side of things is a lot more stable than the graphics.
On a brighter note, at least the graphics don't look so bad anymore. The new toolbar icons are pretty nice (although some of them are still almost meaningless symbols that I can't really connect with their purpose). I wish you could move the toolbar icons around -- you only get to turn them on or off; they sort themselves into predetermined groups. Why does the app still have that terrible icon though? Why not a new one that matches all the nice new metal toolbar icons? And why do documents created with Peak still not look like documents at all? I wish they'd just quit trying to be cute about their interface design and just hire someone that knows what they're doing.
AAC support is good! I opened some AAC files and they work just like any other audio file. BIAS is ahead of the game in that regard. Multichannel audio I/O support is good too -- most stereo audio recording/editing apps in OS X don't let you choose which inputs to record from when your audio I/O has more than 2 (left/right).
This is definitely a big improvement over Peak 3, but it's still buggy and at $500 USD for just a 2 channel recorder/editor it's still the biggest rip-off in audio software (consider that for a couple hundred more, you can buy Logic, which is FAR more stable and polished and does 100 times more; hell, there are versions of Logic for LESS than this). Keep workin on it though, BIAS. Once it's more polished and doesn't feel like glitchy, alpha software, I'll bite the bullet and pay the exorbitant price, as I do need a standalone audio editing program. In the meantime though, I still can't bring myself to buy something that feels this glitchy and rushed.
