Editors' Review

At first sight, BCWipe looks like nothing special, but this data destroyer proves quite powerful and handy. The interface is flexible, allowing you to obliterate a file or folder anytime through the Explorer right-click menu. For regular cleaning, the Task Manager can be configured to delete specific files at scheduled intervals--for example, your browser cache on system shutdown. You have a choice of three erasing methods: filling with zeros, DoD 5200.28-STD, or Peter Gutmann. You also can add your own method, combining byte patterns with any number of passes to overwrite the data. The program can wipe all free disk space or just that of swap or hibernation files. BCWipe even can encrypt the swap file. The program doesn't consume much in the way of system resources. Powerful yet simple, BCWipe is recommended for both home and business use.

"This page is terrible!"

September 15, 2011  |  By xeno735

 |  Version: BCWipe 3.11.7

None. This page does not provide what it says it does, a link to BCWipe 3.11.7

I took time to sign up for CNet to complain about all the "Download" links on this page which are junk spam crap. Please stop this practice on your site, it makes using your page a horrible experience.

Where is the DL link for the old version of BCWipe? I still don't see it. I want the old version, not the latest because the latest does not work on Win95, an old system I need to destroy.

"One of the best data deletion programs available"

October 28, 2009  |  By Adder1st

 |  Version: BCWipe 3.11.7

Integrated into right-click menu; file slack, free space & swapfile wiping; recent & hibernation file wiping; scheduled wiping, multiple choices of algorithums including custom; swapfile encryption; small footprint & low system resource usage.

Has the same problem as many other programs (including most defrag programs) when attempting to evaluate time remaining for an operation which is caused by basing it on total space used while folders have a deep hierarchy contained within them.

I have been using Jetico's BCWipe for the past 12 years. I have tried similar products but invariably return to BCWipe. I usually use a slightly older version than whatever is current simply because the old versions are free to use. My current version is 3.11.4. I did just download 3.11.7 to evaluate it for the 30-Day trial period but when I visited the Jetico site, I discovered the newest version ? BCWipe v.4 beta. After perusing the new features (transparent wiping, an impressive list of additional wiping algorithms, updated browser support, enhanced UI, & support for Windows 7) I decided to download and install it instead of installing the current release. Based on the new features, version 4 will in all likelihood be the first version for which I will purchase a license.

No matter which version you wish to use ? an older free version if you can find one, the current 3.11.7 30-Day trial, or the beta version ? you will have one of the best forensic data deletion programs available. It is a stable, powerful program that does exactly what it promises and each new release adds more features, faster performance, and more peace of mind.

For more info check out the Jetico website. They also have some other great products (all with full version free-to-try and a few freeware items), all of which I use, and no, I am not an employee nor do I receive any benefit from endorsing their products. In this day and age of bloated, buggy, often misleading software with unintuitive, sloppy UIs, incompatibility issues, adware, and far too often malware hidden within, Jetico?s rock-solid BCWipe and their other security programs are a breath of fresh air.

"Good overall, but some glitches"

BCWipe does what it says, completely overwrites histories, files, directories, etc. The task manager was helpful.

Tasks' time estimate often incorrect. Swap encryption causes problems

I tried the evaluation copy, which is fully functional for 30 days.

BCWipe overestimates and underestimates the time needed to complete scheduled tasks. For example, an estimate to wipe the swap file. slack space and free space was given as 14 hours, using DOD standard, but took over 23 hours. An estimate to wipe only free space, using Peter Gutmann stadard, was given as 12 hours, but only took 2.5 hours.

Swap file encryption is helpful if you use encryption software. No problem was found using it with TrueCrypt. BCWipe does warn that the initial encryption may cause a problem, but Windows would normally afterward. However, at random times, Windows XP on start up would give me a warning that a software change has occurred and if I wanted to proceed. Given the problems caused viruses and rootkits, this warning may give some users pause. Windows proceed to load normal when I chose to proceed. This problem should be fixed to ease the concerns of users that something is seriously wrong with their computer. Unti thenl, I'd recommend wiping the swap file manually.

Individual file and folder deletion was fast and useful, even when using Peter Gutmann Standard.

Nothing good about it.

Do not use it unless you want to format your HD.
