"Expensive, but goood"
This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
I've always felt the BBEdit was far too expensive, and that it would be more fairly priced if it were in the $50 to $100 range. But when 8.0 came out I was in the middle of a massive website redesign and needed to spend 8 or 10 hours a day in my text editor. I tried 8.0 and realized that it was so good that I would just have to buy it because it was next to indispensible. Luckily I qualified for a student discount, so I got it for a little over $100. It is true that BBEdit is "just a text editor", but if spend a day or two learning its features and customize it to fit your workflow (for example, using the glossaries feature), you will find that it enables you to work in an ultra-efficient, ultra productive way. And as a registered user, Bare Bones gives you excellent support. The list of fixes and additions in 8.0.3 is so long it took me nearly half an hour to read it! And I was delighted to see that both of the major bugs that I reported were fixed in the update. It's hard to imagine how they could make this any better. It's not Cocoa, which was why I never bought the pre-8.0 versions; but in 8.0 the text editing behaviours (line selection etc) exactly match those that I am used to from working in Cocoa editors (like Xcode). So now I can move between the two in total comfort. I have had some crashes, but they've been infrequent, and on the whole the software seems very, very stable.
