"Better than many paid anti-virus software"
Version: Avira Free Antivirus 12.0.0.1125
Pros
Great virus detection rate!!!
Cons
Nothing as of now.
Summary
I don't know how they give it for free.I have tried many anti-virus software but at last settled with Avira.

"Avira won't even install! It wants Service Pack 3."
Version: Avira Free Antivirus 12.0.0.1125
Pros
It's dead Jim. There's nothing to like.
Cons
I have Windows XP with Service Park 2. Avira won't install because it wants Service Pack 3. I've read several horror stories about guys wrestling with SP 3 for hours. There is no way I'm installing SP 3 on my computer. I shall seek and find another anti-virus program.

"Great software recommended."
Version: Avira Free Antivirus 12.0.0.1125
Pros
Read summary.
Cons
Read summary.
Summary
It has the highest detection ratios out of Avast and AVG. It has simplier settings then Avast and a better UI then AVG. Also has the lowest false positives out of the 3. Though, it doesnt have a good anti-spyware like AVG or advanced protection like Avast. I recommend Avast as #1 and as this as #2. For all those who are who have the ask toolbar, that means you allowed it to install during the installation. If you have had read carefully you would have noticed it. For the pop ups, go into the settings and disable them or change the duration to 0 or 1.

"It's adware, plain and simple"
Version: Avira Free Antivirus 12.0.0.1125
Pros
Used to be, Avira would provide update popups which you could configure, and full-screen ads which you couldn't. Now it's popup screens every time you turn around...really interfering with work.
Cons
Difficult to get anything done with the constant interruptions. This was a decent program but now it goes in the bin.
Summary
Call it what you want--adware, malware, spam--it's no longer worth downloading.
The people who are saying there's only one popup per day are using the old version. Update and see what happens.

"The pop-ups, Oh the pop-ups!"
Version: Avira Free Antivirus 12.0.0.1125
Pros
Provides adequate protection with virus scans, but refuses to remember which files to ignore and tries to delete them daily.
Cons
Pop-ups trying to get me to buy the full version constantly. I have my laptop hooked up to my entertainment system, and the ads would come up during movies and everything. Finally, I had to stop watching a movie to close an ad twice and just uninstalled Avira completely. There are other free antivirus programs that aren't quite as imposing that I'm trying out.
Summary
Didn't get any viruses while using this, but the ads and 'special offer' pop-ups were unbearable.
-
"uninstalled because of the barrage of pop-up ads"
Version: Avira Free Antivirus 12.0.0.1125
Pros
yeah, it's free
Cons
ads here, ads there, there an ad, here an ad, everywhere a pop-up ad.
Summary
Uninstalled due the ad pop-up frequency. To hell with an annoying program that wants you to buy the full version once or twice a day.

"Great product that protects your computer."
Version: Avira Free Antivirus 12.0.0.1125
Pros
*First I would like to make a note*
You DON'T have to install the ask toolbar. The people who are complaining about it didn't read carefully. It specifically says "Do you agree to the ASK USER's AGREEMENT" Just don't check the box and click next.
Now onto my review.
Avira has been a great tool for me to get rid of unwanted malware/viruses. I have been using it for years and haven't had a problem with it.
1)It is a light weight program and scans thoroughly.
2)It has real-time protection.
3)You can choose which drives you want to scan.Cons
The only thing I don't like about it is the new look. There is also a splash pop-up screen, but that can easily be disabled. Just google it.
Summary
Overall Avira is a great lightweight program to use. I'd recommend it anyone.

"crap compatibility"
Version: Avira Free Antivirus 12.0.0.1125
Pros
at least it's free
Cons
not compatible with komodo firewall and spybot
-
"not likely"
Version: Avira Free Antivirus 12.0.0.1125
Pros
I don't care!
Cons
not compatible with Zone Alarm
Summary
I've been using Avira for a couple of years. I started to upgrade. It told me that the new version was not compatible with Zone Alarm and it would be disabled. Guess who loses.
Sorry that wasn't Avira.
Updated on Jun 19, 2012
But Avira constantly includes ASK toolbar files. I don't even want those on my system. I have to boot into safe mode to get rid of them.
