"Very Effective. Ugly? yes, but then fighting Virus & worms is a dirty job."

    February 18, 2005  |   By jayskye2000

    Version: Avira Free Antivirus 6.27

    Pros

While this program has crashed a few operating sys, it is because the infections were in that deep. After formatting, and reinstalling OS and programming, I have had no other trouble. I have used this on 98, ME, and XP Home and Pro. It has beat ALL other virus programs hands down for digging out infections. On a fresh machine, no worries. On a machine that has been on line for some time, BACKUP your important files before installing, just in case the infections are deep in the OS.

    Cons

    No mail scanning, No uninstall.

"Doesn't Uninstall well and contains Bundled Adware"

    February 18, 2005  |   By starangel1312

    Version: Avira Free Antivirus 6.27

    Pros

The product seemed to worked well, it caught some virus's.

    Cons

Now for the cons: I noticed when I did Ctrl Alt Del. that there were several adware programs listed, where there had been NONE before.

This is why I decided to uninstall. Tried to do it from add/remove programs, and it would not totally uninstall, the bar indicator just sat there at 3/4 of the way, for a LONG time. So finally I trashed the folder and contents. Now when I restart my computer I get a dos screen saying that the system.INI and registry says I am missing a file 'AVGuard' necessary to run the program, every time I restart. Although I am able to get onto Windows, this is a pain. I am not sure how to get around this. If I reinstall the software, what happens if it does NOT uninstall again?

I use Windows 98, with a Pentium Celeron processor, at 128 mb's of RAM.

"Bottom line: Caught virus AVG, AVAST, and NORTON did not."

    February 15, 2005  |   By WinME

    Version: Avira Free Antivirus 6.27

    Pros

Caught Trojan Flooder.Deflo.A in an unopened file program called Deflooder.zip made for ICQ. Perhaps it was just a line the file program itself used to detect and combat this trojan, however the other free scanners (including Norton's (Symantec) Online Scanner!) did not detect it. (Makes me wonder if these programs would have detected the trojan even if this was a false positive.) I kept a different ICQ anti-flooding program and deleted & wiped the zip file I had never opened, as AntiVir can report but not clean archives. It also searched through my (Windows ME) restore (back-up) archives, opening each one to scan which apparently AVG did not. 1) Norton (Online) told me I was fine. 2) Avast! told me I was fine, and after uninstalling I got an "ashbug.exe" loop in my Ctrl-Alt-Delete window. This is after having no problems with viruses and not using scanners for 10 years. 3) AVG (which I used to check for remnants of "ashbug" after recovering by restoring inspite of misinformation through an online search saying not to restore) said I was fine (and the restore fixed the problem). 4) AntiVir (one last try of a free scanner) was the first to indicate an unrelated 'infection', although my system has slowed, which the others didn't do. So, we'll see. I might use it only occassionally, but I'll use it to find and solve possible infections. My email works with it also (AVG clashed with my email & firewall setup).

    Cons

Took 3 times as long to scan, just finishing with my restore files in the time AVG scanned my whole hard-drive, but I liked the fact they were actually scanned for a change. It seems to have slowed down my system noticeably (1Ghz Pentium III 128Mb ram). Bottom line, it picked up something the others didn't. I may only use a virus scanner intermittantly so I can use my firewall and email without hassle, but when I do it'll be this one.
