I've tried Avira Antivirus many years ago and could NOT remove it from windows xp registry after uninstall.. (made windows security center always say; Avira antivirus is already installed, this might lead to a conflict.) Avast or AVG has never failed me in that way..

Just tell me one thing thou'..
Why do "CNET editors" only rate it 3 and a half stars if it is a very good program? I might wonder but it did work well in other ways for me back then, but Ill hope You wont have to uninstall it , cause I did try back then to usethere tool also - but its probably better now.. =) -

Pros
Avira never fails to stun me. This new version is super-effective against viruses. It freed my laptop of a number of viruses and adwares and all those other stuffs that were creeping in it. The best Anti-virus among AVG, Avast, and Avira, according to me.
Also, the new version has an attractive GUI, too.Cons
Just wish that there was firewall in this free version.

- No 64 bit support for ProActiv

Imho Avira managed to lose it's reputation and technological skills in the past 2 years. The product's (in former days good!) technology seems now to be far behind industry standards. Many features - including the user interface - are outdated and hard to use in newer OS. With all this advertising and toolbar crap it seems that they moved to the "dark side".

Easy install and works well to keep your computer safe. Offers nice options for regular virus checks, surfing and malware.
Cons
Pop up for upgrades and special offers happen a lot- offset by price- free.
Summary
Effective and not overloaded with too many changes to your search engines or too overprotective.

Seems relatively stable with a clean GUI design and appears to work well, although I have not performed any benchmarking yet (and may not have time in the future).
Cons
The Cons I've noted so far relate to the frequent (in my opinion) and obtrusive advertisements for upgrading.
Summary
Seems good so far. If you don't mind frequent and obtrusive advertisements or are opting for the paid version give it a try.
