    "Very powerful heuristics"

    September 12, 2007  |   By EconomistBR

Version: Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic 7.00.04.15

    Pros

According to many tests Antivir is the best free Anti-Virus.

    AV Comparatives liked it.

Avira Antivir is equipped with powerful heuristics and behavior monitors that are able to identify brand new viruses not yet present on its library.

    Cons

    Way too many false positives.

Antivir found 4 viruses that are in reality legitimate programs, but that happens because of the powerful behavior monitor of this anti -virus.

    "not bad"

    September 12, 2007  |   By darko.zivkovic

Version: Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic 7.00.04.15

    Pros

It works. All other applications work, don't they? Or some of you have other opinion? I think that Avira, AVG, Avast, ...work. But there is a difference in user-friendly feeling - given in Cons

    Cons

    1. Pop ups

    2. License will expire in ... what is this? This is FREE application. We don't need such info.

So my friends please find application(s) which doesn't have two above cons, and use it (them).

    "Almost as bad as infestation"

    September 10, 2007  |   By simpsonct

Version: Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic 7.00.04.15

    Pros

    Identified lots of threats

    Cons

Anti-intuitive doesn't open conventionally, no way to close the program. It totally overwhelmed my older system (Intel Cen 1.3g). The first time I opened it, I got an umbrilla for half an hour, had no idea what it was doing, finally had to reboot. Finally got it to scan. The quick scan got nothing. Choosing other scans was overly complicated. The second scan was supposed to be a more extensive check but somehow only checked the empty floppy drive. Gave up and had it scan every file. First it reported there were three times as many files as my system held. The progress bar hit 6.1% and stayed there. It got 66 hits including a batch file I wrote myself. I tried accessing the online discriptions of the threats it was supposedly finding only to get 'file not found'. The online information is useless, their website is slower then my first modem. Hours latter, everything quarentined, gave up trying to evaluate the threats individually because their links don't lead anywhere. Reboot and what to I find? The same popping ad series that caused me to download the program in the first place. I guess the first time I rebooted I was lucky because I managed to turn the threat guard off because it made system completely unresponsive. The second time I rebooted the system stayed unresponsive even with the guard clicked off. Could not end the program with Task Manager. Exiting the program doesn't exit. Four reboots later I finally got the guard off, was able to access Add/Remove software and kick the program off my computer.

"Slow, but seems to provide excellent protection"

    September 10, 2007  |   By alienanderson

Version: Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic 7.00.04.15

    Pros

Works, works well and keeps on working well

    Cons

Only two minor problems - the occasional adverts to upgrade (fair enough - it is freeware after all) and also I can't find an option to make window minimize to system tray when running a system scan. Also a bit slow, but that is good news for other applications who still have plenty of system resources available

    "4 x annoying"

    September 9, 2007  |   By rankle08

Version: Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic 7.00.04.15

    Pros

My computer slowed down at startup dramatically for about 3 weeks until my long used AVG's daily scans finally found a trojan and a virus. After detection and cleaning everything sped up again, but I figured that was too long of a wait to get rid of the problem. I started looking for another antivirus. Upon reading such sterling reviews, I downloaded AntiVir. Antivir seemed to work hard but did not find anything wrong with my system, as I pretty much expected as things were running well by then. It may do a good job detecting, but I'll never know for sure.

    Cons

1st annoyance: took forever to download on a 300kbps dsl connection

2nd annoyance: initial update took forever at an average of about 26 kbps

3rd annoyance: it took longer than AVG and seemed to use more cpu cycles to scan

4th annoyance: after updating and scanning AntiVir's resident shield kept spinning my c: drive in little bursts every few seconds. My drive is usually quiet but those little spins buzzed like a fly in my ear. I thought maybe I could live with it, but then my wife used the computer and it bugged the ____ out of her. I removed it and restored my sanity.
