Version: Avira AntiVir Personal - Free Antivirus 8
"Good but flawed compared with the competition"
Pros: Excellent user interface, small system footprint. Fast scanning times, excellent detection record in all AV comparative tests, very fast definition response time to newly identified threats.
Cons: Painfully slow update procedure (one suspects it may deliberately be throttled to encourage paying for the premium version), rather complicated to set initial configuration, scheduling, etc. Very annoying emphasis on selling the paid-for version, from the prominent "Free Version" labelling on the interface to the intrusive nag screens that accompany updates. If you compare all this with avast! and AVG, the otherwise technically superb Avira product doesn't come through too well. Oh, and there's no POP3 or SMTP scanning in the free version, so unless you stick to Gmail or another web-based service, there's no desktop level email protection.

You can't compare AVIRA with avg(sucks) and avast.Avira beats them on detection rate.

I agree with you on the updating time. I have used Avira for a long time. I liked it so much that I eventually bought the Avira Personal Edition Pro. I think I paid around $20 for it..well worth the price. I had let my subscription expire so I thought I would try the free version. As soon as it started updating I said "forget this". I couldn't believe how long it took. It was more than a few minutes...I didn't think it would ever finish. It wasn't my computer either...I have a two year old Sony / Pentium 4 desktop. With the Pro it takes seconds to download updates. The only other thing that bothers me are the "warnings" during a scan. They are usually nothing but files that can't be opened. I have tried Avast and AVG..I like Avast the best. Still you can't beat Avira..

I dont know what type of connection you are using.well even if you use dial-up it wont take that long to update.the incremental update/daily update is only a small fragment of file which is usually 1mb - 2mb.so, i dont know what type of updating you are talking about because i only need not more than 2-3 minutes to finish updating daily.btw, avast and avg are no way near the quality of avira.so,pls dont compare.cheers
