"Works with a small footprint"

On my 5 yr. old laptop with xp I was using avg. Boot up time was very slow because of the av program, everything was labored. I removed avg and installed avira, and boot up and most other functions really speeded up. Not as much protection with this, but thats the trade off.

I used Antivir for a long time myself - it was one of the best. Today I can only recommend to keep your fingers of that stuff. It misses security key features like IM, web and mail protection. Updates are slow if you can reach the servers. That damn nag screen always tries to up-sell to another expensive "Premium" edition wihich has features others companies offer for free. Bug fixes have been delivered within weeks in the past whereas the first patch for the new version 10 took approx. 6 months. This is not acceptable, even for a free product.
Right now I recommend Avast. Small, fast, full featured and very good detection! -

3. Fast: won't slow your computer.
4. Allows the browser addon "AVG Linkscanner" to operate, providing a 1-2 AV punch: Linkscanner does NOT work with Avast! and many others.Cons
1. User interface is not very user friendly, but the power of Avira is worth the extra effort.

Note that Avira Free scores about 0.3% below Avira Premium in major tests, so Free is the basically the same AV engine as Premium. -

English version interface somewhat unclear, evidently translated from german. They ought to get a proper english version.
Summary
Recommended. Previously I used AVG until I realised it did not catch everything (in a bad way) Then I tried Avast 6 which completely crashed my computer after 1st reboot, so I had to remove it via System Restore. Lately many similar 1/5 ratings for Avast so I don't understand where they get the good avareage rating from! I had wanted the sandbox feature but found another great one in Sandboxie.

Uses little resources, catches viruses that others(AVG,Avast) don't, You don't even notice it.
Cons
Have to disable popups that try to sell you full version(Google: Avira Antivir popup, for instructions on this) but that takes a whole 5 minutes to do.
Summary
I had been running Avast for a few years, but noticed some slow-downs and computer doing funky things. After taking advice from a friend to install Avira Antivir along with Spybot: Search and Destroy, I found that I had quite a few pesky adware programs running that Avast nor Windows Defender didn't catch. I've been using Avira Antivir for a few months now and have zero complaints.
