Consistently at or near the top of independent efficacy testers, Avira's AntiVir remains one of the best freeware security solutions around. Its scans are flexible, allowing the user to fully scan both internal and external hard drives, run a preloaded scan--for rootkits, for example--or customize a scan. The latest version introduces antispyware protections, scanning tech that can crack open "locked" files, improved internal security to prevent AntiVir's files from being maliciously altered, and one-click threat removal--no more baby-sitting.

There are few interface changes in version 9, and older users are not likely notice anything different in the interface besides a refreshed banner logo. The main window offers a left side navigation with drop-down menus and a central pane for more detailed information. AntiVir opens to the Status menu, informing you of your last scan, your last definition file update, whether the real-time guard is active, and premium upgrade link. Events logs changes to the program and the Reports tab keeps a history of threats. Both are exportable.

The Local Protection and Administration navigation options reveal the Scanner, Guard, Quarantine, and Scheduler features. Combined with the Configuration button located at the top of the central pane, users can customize their scans as necessary. Quarantined file information is on display, with options to scan it again, restore, delete, and e-mail the file to Avira. The rebuilt heuristic engine retains the same choices from the previous version's, and can be turned on or off in part or in full and offers three intensity levels. The scheduler offers much that other free antivirus programs don't, and the help features are excellent, with mouse-over information on each feature.

Savvy users will notice the removal of the on-demand e-mail scan, and AntiVir is still challenging to fully uninstall. Despite these hang-ups and the nag screen that follows definition file updates, AntiVir offers such effective protection and a well-rounded set of features that as long as the updates keep coming, it'll be our first line of defense.

"Might not install right or be working on XP SP2 & XPSP3"

July 12, 2009  |  By musicman4you

 |  Version: Avira AntiVir Personal Free Antivirus 9.0.0.403

Pros

Use to be the best and may still be if it is working.Mine still updates and scans but I dont think it is working.I have a bootable Norton Disk with Norton WinDoctor on it.It finds problems on your PC and always right.Says missing Program Files.Avira

Cons

Windoctor found 3 problems concerning Avira.Missing File "C:\ProgramFiles\Avira\Antivir Desktop\setup.exe'cannot acess a necessary file mfc90u.dll also msvcp90.dll and msvcr90.dll I googled Avira mfc90u.dll and found another XP PRO SP2 same problem

Summary

I don't know if my Avira is working and protecting me or not.It updates and I can do scans but it did not and does not install correct.I am using Windows XP Home SP3 and read on Googe another person was having the same problem with XP PRO SP2 .I installed Avira before taking the SP3 update.I have a Norton bootable disk with Norton Windoctor on it.It found 3 problems concerning Avira.Missing File "C:\ProgramFiles\Avira\Antivir Desktop\setup.exe'cannot access a necessary file mfc90u.dll also Missing File "C:\ProgramFiles\Avira\Antivir Desktop\setup.exe'cannot access a necessary file msvcp90.dll and Missing File "C:\ProgramFiles\Avira\Antivir Desktop\setup.exe'cannot access a necessary file msvcr90.dll I completly removed Avira and all traces from my PC and reinstalled Avira again.Same problem as above with the same 3 files above.I know that msvcp90.dll is the C++Runtime Library Version 9.0.30729.1 in my WinSxS Folder and that the msvcr90.dll is the C Runtime Library Version 9.0.30729.1 and that mfc90u.dll is MFCDLL Shared Library Retail Version 9.0.30729.1 Is this part of the Microsoft Visual C++2008 Redistributal-x86 9.0.30729.17 that has been upgraded by SP3.How can I get Avira to work right. If I remove download and reinstall the Microsoft Visual C++2008 will it still be the version 9.0.30729.1 that I got after updateing to SP3.Just bought a New Dell a few weeks ago and don't wont to have to start all over again.Have everything working on this PC except Avira. If I didn't have the WinDoctor tool I would not have known this.Google Avira mfc90u.dll or mfc90u.dll Avira and it is in about the top 3 or 4 I think concerning XP PRO SP2.So I don't know if it is protecting me or not since it needs these files to work.I posted this on the Avira site about 24 hours ago but no replies from anybody. If anybody knows a workaround for this then please post it.I went to a site on Google to test your Antivirus and my Avira did not pick up the safe test Virus but Avast did on my other PC so go figure ????? Without Windoctor or some other Tool I wonder how many other Avira users have the same problem and dont know.I will update my post if I get and answer from Avira or find another Tool so other users can checkout there computers for this problem. Thanks

Updated on Jul 14, 2009

As I promised I would update if I got anymore information.Okay Avira replied back to me.They recommended I test my Avira with a Free online Antivirus tester and here is how it went.Okay I went to www.eicar.com and here are the results.I hope they are normal. When I clicked on eicar.com at the beginning of both rows under standard protocol http and SSL enabled protocol https Avira popped up that a virus had been detected and I denied access. For all six of the others, three under standard protocol http and three under SSL enabled protocol https I could and did downloaded all six zip and txt files to a Folder. After I downloaded these six files I did a scan on each one of them in the Folder and a Virus was detected on them all.Is this normal and what Avira should have done or caught them during the download? Please let me know ASAP and thanks a bunch.Got my fingers crossed. Then Avira replied and told me I was okay and Avira was working even though I got those errors.

"AVComparatives likes it... so do I"

October 31, 2009  |  By Dunlavy

 |  Version: Avira AntiVir Personal Free Antivirus 9.0.0.403

Pros

Dependable even at corporate level. Great value for home users, even premium package.

Cons

The fact that paid-for antivirus solutions are still more popular in America. Free version has one pop-up per update process.

Summary

In short, without the pop-up ad (usually tasteful) that displays when the program updates (once a week, depending on settings), this would be the best AV solution in the world. Fast. Lean. Configurable. Current virus definitions come daily/weekly that really provide coverage against each week's new threats.

Ironically enough, a lot of negative reviews have been written for this product, citing the spotty AVG as a superior product in terms of being more compact (it's not) and offering better protection (I have proof that it doesn't at ArsTechnica or AVComparatives).

"Annoying and overwhelming!"

August 03, 2009  |  By aries_toomany

 |  Version: Avira AntiVir Personal Free Antivirus 9.0.0.403

Pros

Good at protection, reminders, and updates.

Cons

Too many notifications to the point you can't exit them out completely.

Summary

I had this on my Mom's laptop to see if it would work. Then months later, she complained that these pop-ups are quite annoying. Avira Personal AV is not the choice I'd recommend!

"Useful but..."

August 03, 2009  |  By keinnerst

 |  Version: Avira AntiVir Personal Free Antivirus 9.0.0.403

Pros

Avira was very useful at the begining. It found some trojans and phishing websites...

Cons

However, Avira presents a lot of problems. Never try to run your computer without the firewall. Avira freaks out and it might cause damage on your computer. It becomes really paranoid (even at "medium level") and can slow down your computer.

Summary

If you have already tried others programs and you don't want to pay for a respectful program, then install this RISKY program on your computer. It might work well for few weeks only

"catches threats quickly, easy directions for alerts"

August 02, 2009  |  By mondaysgirl70

 |  Version: Avira AntiVir Personal Free Antivirus 9.0.0.403

Pros

finds serious threats/viruses that other antivirus software did not, - gives informative, clear options on how to deal with issues

Cons

menu could be more user friendly and easy to decipher

Summary

I have tried avast, regcure, and even spybot and none of them could find a serious trojan in my system. This software detected the problem and made it simple for me to eliminate it.

"Very good AV"

August 01, 2009  |  By b-i-k-e-r

 |  Version: Avira AntiVir Personal Free Antivirus 9.0.0.403

Pros

Doesn't slow your system down (like AVG does). Finds things that Avast! missed.

Cons

The pop-up ads. But these are easily stopped (on XP at least) by going to Local Security Policy & adding a New Path Rule to avnotify.exe in the Avira program folder, takes 30 secs to do.
