Plenty of apps promise to clean up and reorganize your Android desktop, but Yahoo's Aviate succeeds better than most. It starts by asking you to pick your ten favorite apps, and then it analyzes and organizes all your apps in Collections such as Utilities, News, and Entertainment and presents them in an attractive, minimalist layout. Aviate is free for Android 2.3 and above.
Essentials: Aviate's default wallpaper depicts a serene mountain scene with time and local weather above and our top five apps below.
Swipe or tap: Tapping toolbar icons or swiping partly to the left displayed weather details and alarm and sleep modes; and swiping all the way exposed the color-coded Spaces menu. To the right of the main screen, expandable collections let us quickly access all our apps.
Widgets: Aviate can create a desktop widget out of almost anything.
Categories: Aviate does a pretty good job of categorizing our apps in Collections, but a few were difficult to locate at first. We could add new Collections, but the editing process could be more intuitive.
More info: Aviate could use more extensive instructions, and the Settings could be more extensive and better organized.
Aviate is a work in progress, but it's got a lot going for it, starting with the fact that it actually cleaned up and improved our phone's workspace. Desktop enhancements for Android (or any OS) are usually a matter of personal preference, but Aviate will suit many tastes.
