Pros
It's very tolerant when you customize it, even though I visit some potentially harmful sites it let me fly around; then I rise the level of protection again and check my system detecting unwanted stuff.

It works flawless and very transparent to my system. The thing I like is that it let me surf the net without worry and download drivers, audio, movies with confident that I'm protected.

Summary
The problems that most antiviruses have are, to me, the selling points of this one. It updates often, almost daily, and it doesn't bog down your system. When someone calls me with a malware problem, I'll clean the machine up and install avast!, or format the hard drive and install avast!
Can your browser go to Microsoft.com? Avast.com? If not, game over, man. You're infected.
Note: A good antivirus is only part of keeping your computer clean. The other parts involve safe computer usage habits (not browsing for warez or porn, opening unknown email attachments), keeping your operating system and other software patched and up-to-date, and using strong passwords to name a few.

Updated on Apr 13, 2009I've installed avast! on numerous computers without a single hitch. If it did mess up, it was an anomaly. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if you had infected yourself by playing with viruses. Could it be maybe you were already infected and a virus kept avast! from installing correctly?
As far as phishing attacks, can you not recognize one when you see one? If not, install No-Script for Firefox.

Tried this antivirus product because hit rates are very high according to several reviews.Tried on a laptop and a pc, PC: Win XP, 2gb ram, 320gb harddrive, 2.8 P4. Laptop: Win XP, 512k ram, 40 gb hardrive, 1.6 ghz.

Tried on a laptop and a pc, both of which slowed down considerably. Very disappointed.
Summary
Could not use because laptop and pc were slowed considerably. I have installed the product, but use the on demand scanner part only. My backgroup: was a lan administrator for a major out sourcing company, but have retired.
