"This program is a MEMORY HOG!"

    September 26, 2009  |   By mitchflorida

Version: Avast Home Edition - Free Antivirus 4.8.1356

    Pros

The only pro is the price . . free.

    Cons

Avast will slow your computer to a crawl and won't protect your computer when the chips are down.

    Summary

Be a sport and buy Norton Anti-Virus . . it really speeded up my computer. Not free but you can get a good deal if you check out Ebay. Forget about these "free" antivirus programs. they are buggy and will degrade your computer performance. Don't expect to get something for nothing!

    "Superb at every single aspect"

    September 26, 2009  |   By maniopas

Version: Avast Home Edition - Free Antivirus 4.8.1356

    Pros

Has greate features, with quicker and more effective scan than most programs
Also, scans registry and memory on startup

    Cons

Not very good at changing Virus Vault.
Automatically blocked some dangerous sites I still wished to see and had to tune it off for a while to do so.

    Summary

I have not used it for a year, but I still think of it as one of the best of its kind. Has many easy-to-use features.

    "excellent product"

    September 26, 2009  |   By starburstjellybn

Version: Avast Home Edition - Free Antivirus 4.8.1356

    Pros

Better results than Norton AV and with the increase in ad-/spy-/general malware protection, I use spywareblaster and spybot S&D MUCH less often. It catches things the freebies miss, including AVG, and, of course, it's completely free for home use :)

    Cons

Only real complaint is that sometimes if you're using an application that is file-intensive or another app that is hard on the CPU, you may have to temporarily disable the on-access scanning (Don't forget to turn it back on ASAP!!)

    Summary

Long story short, its many features and excellent effectiveness make this my favorite AV suite. It even warns you about potential threats that your WEB BROWSER may try to open, which is very important since all 4 of the major browsers sometimes miss such things (Internet Explorer/FireFox/GoogleChrome/Opera) even with a good HOSTS file and Spybot Resident protection. No major complaints, just the odd minor nuisance, which is more than compensated for by the excellent protection. Well, then again, lately it seems that AVS and database updaes, although running in a background process, seem to occupy quite a bit of RAM (which may not actually be necessary, I can't speak for the Avast programmers) and during such inconvenient times you may experience a noticeable slowdown in overall PC performance. They may want to consider allowing updates to be semi-automatic so you can choose a convenient time to install them ;)
