Version: Avast Home Edition - Free Antivirus 4.8.1356
"horrible horrible---won't install, won't uninstall"
Pros: I finally was able to uninstall this program by downloading some additional program, restarting in safe mode, and running the program. You can't uninstall from add/remove programs.
Cons: This program never worked. I never received my registration information. The programS that were installed (it wasn't just anti-virus, it was a package of programs) never ran. I couldn't uninstall with add/remove programs. Terrible....

"Excellent product for tight budget"
Pros: I enjoy the instantaneous, real-time protection and automatic updates to both virus signatures and program updates. Covers all vulnerable avenues of attack from removable memories, P2P and IM networks, Web sites and Email.
Cons: Free license is only good for one year. User must re-register each year to receive a new key.
Summary: Out performed Norton and McAfee in a side by side test on an infected PC. Plus for really nasty Trojan horse viruses, anyone can go to the avast web site and allow them to remove the infection... which works great when your machine keeps replicating ... read more

Version: Avast Home Edition - Free Antivirus 4.8.1356
Pros: This is a great product. Easy to use and doesn't take a ton of space on my computer. My computer still runs fast and now is virus free - which I had 2 viruses on my system thanks to ZoneAlarm!
Cons: I'd like to reset the question "do you want a scan when you're computer turns on" but I can't find it.

Pros: Daily updates. Apparently thorough virus protection. Friendly interface.
Cons: I'm running XP home. I can't be sure Avast did it, but I found Firefox updates blocked as well as other non-harmful software.
Summary: Avast seemed to effectively block my administrative capabilities! When I tried to use Windows' add or remove programs utility to remove Avast, Windows said it was already removed and asked if I wanted to remove it from the add/remove list. I answered... read more

"Excellent. Avast has the right idea offering free AV"
Pros: Avast has the exact right idea by offering AV free to home users; by protecting home users, they protect the web. By protecting the web, everyone's safer. Easy to use interface has multiple levels of protection and protects multiple formats.
Cons: Can't think of any.
Summary: I've wasted money on Defender Pro, Norton, and McAffee. D Pro was reasonable but it missed some Trojan horses. Had Norton for 3 years; at end of life, it slowed my computer to a crawl and was nearly impossible to remove. Of the pay services, McAffe... read more
