"Watch out for the payment processor."

    January 12, 2013  |   By 4cigar22

The free version is fantastic. The paid version is even better. So I have used Avast for years, but....

Avast now uses Digital River as its payment processor. A hint of the reputation of Digital River (DRI) can be found with this Google search:

In sum, when ordering a 5-copy license, I got double billed. When I asked for a credit, 4 more charges were attempted against my credit card by DRI, which American Express denied. All 6 charges totaled about $1,000.

So I called American Express. They credited my account for the double charge and told me they had denied the 4 additional attempts by DRI to place charges on my card. So they cancelled the card, issued a new one, and delivered it by express mail. (Yea American Express!!! What's in your wallet?)

Advice: Take the free software but *never* buy anything from Avast since you can't tell whether DRI is handling the order until it's too late.
