  "Crappy protection"

  Pros

  Simple interface.

  Cons

  Avast failed to detect more than 37 virus' and trojans.
  Avast was running, and updated, on my aunt's Win XP machine. She was getting popups and browser re-directs: and it was horribly slow. I ran a full scan with Avast and it detected nothing.
  I then ran Malwarebytes and installed Avira, and got more than 250 detentions, 37 being virus' as mentioned above.

  Summary

  About as secure as a screen door.

  I used a lot of anti-virus programs and avast free is still one of the best free anti-virus programs out there.
  They also really improved Avast (i have no more BSOD and other issues, plus no more pop-ups, only one ad when opening) and it finds less false/positives.
  Next to that, Avast has great detection rate. (look at pro reviews and tests)
  Avira finds a lot of false/positives and malwarebytes also finds some false/positives.
  But MWB is a anti-malware program, not an anti-virus program.
  Go for malwarebytes+superantispyware+windows firewall+avast (or MSE) combination i would suggest.
  And disable windows defender when using avast or any other anti-virus. Windows defender can cause slow-downs and other issues.

  Maybe you installed Avast as secondary protection in so called "compatible mode". If so, it will not find all threats.
