- Updates often; recommend disabling update pop-ups in settings.Summary
I've used this for a few years now and I have never had reason to regret it; in fact, I can only think of one virus that broke through it and my firewall in all that time and it was easily dispatched.
The user-interface is very easy to use, as is the ability to customize your scans. The quick-scans are mostly unobtrusive and can be set to run on start-up or you can schedule boot scans. The full system scans can be modified to be as deep as you feel necessary, though depending on your computer size they may take some time to complete.
Free version includes many of the features other programs only allow in pro versions, including real-time mail, web, p2p, im, network, script, and behavior shields. You can also enable browser plug-ins, site blocking, and run new suspicious programs in a sandbox to avoid contaminating your computer. If you are a gamer, you can also enter Avast into Gaming Mode.
Generally unobtrusive, as long as you disable the updated pop-ups from showing since Avast seems to update its virus definitions pretty often (or checks for updates or something).
Definitely a good find!
