"Finally #1....Deserves to be ranked #1 on CNET's list"

    December 19, 2012  |   By AntivirusGeek

    Version: Avast Free Antivirus 7.0.1474

    Pros

    +Fast Updating
+Fast detection and blocking of threats also internet connection is aborted when a threat is blocked for maximum security.
    +Sandbox
    +Light on system resources
+Excellent protection from all 8 shields.

++Avast is so much better than AVG who tries to imitate Avast but is a failure. When Avast compres to Avira, it demolishes it since Avira free only offers system protection and not web protection unlike Avast.
Avast is the best free roubust protector for your system!!!!!!

    Cons

    None at all.

    Summary

Avast detection rate on malware in the system is slightly higher as Avira or AVG (by about 3%)but Avast auto sandbox isolates the suspicious item automatically so no harm is done to the system. Also Avast new cloud feature automatically submits the suspicious item to their labs while keeping the file in the sandbox. This is done in the background so the user is not aware until the result has been made. Finally Avast web protection blocks 96% plus based on AV- COMPARATIVES. WEST COAST LABS and AV-TEST. AVG and Avira can't compare to the high quality standard set by Avast when it comes to PROTECTION and DETECTION as well as PREVENTION....

    Always choose Avast

"USED to be good, now its just JUNK.windows 8 uses avoid"

    December 18, 2012  |   By kyle3389

    Version: Avast Free Antivirus 7.0.1474

    Pros

Great security, when its working. The safezone and sandbox modes are kinda cool.

    Cons

DOES NOT WORK WITH WINDOWS 8. Blocks random websites. Uses lots of CPU(60-80%).

    Summary

I recently got windows 8 on my computer and re-installed avast onto it, it used up about 60-80% of my computers CPU at all times causing it to be very slow. Also it would block almost every other website FOR NO REASON! unless i disabled the shields but that's not safe.. i contacted support and they sent me one email, i emailed them back and never got any responses back! Avast used to be the best not it sucks! I'm sticking with AVG for now on.

Before when i had it on my windows 7 o.s. it used to run great.. but now that i have windows 8 its all about AVG! sorry avast but you let me down.

    "Nag nag nag"

    December 17, 2012  |   By acord01

    Version: Avast Free Antivirus 7.0.1474

    Pros

If you'd asked me six months ago? This area would have been full and the one below it would have been empty. Now? Not so much.

    Cons

*Used* to be good AV software.

Now it's slower than hell and letting Firefox scan your downloads automatically with this results in lock-ups. Worse, it's consistently popping up with nag messages on the free home version to buy the pro version now. That's COMPLETELY UNFORGIVABLE.

    Summary

Nagware that will interrupt every forking thing you do. Don't download it - you'll regret it.

    Version: Avast Free Antivirus 7.0.1474

    Pros

I hate this software. I want my money back

    Cons

No matter what I tried, this software that I paid for blocks any access whatsoever to my usb Verizon 5 spot 3G modem. It also installed Google Chrome without permission.

    Summary

I had to uninstall it to access the internet.

    "Potentially Lethal"

    December 12, 2012  |   By sakulin

    Version: Avast Free Antivirus 7.0.1474

    Pros

    Attractive format and free.

    Cons

The current version of Avast Free comes bundled with Chrome with no permission asked. It slowed my computer to a crawl with constant error messages while using either Firefox or Explorer. I uninstalled Chrome and even with the browser removed coninued to get Chrome Script error messages. I removed Avast and replaced it with Avira Free and my problems were resolved. Use this product at your own risk.

"how did this manage to get the top ranking?"

    December 12, 2012  |   By mrambler956

    Version: Avast Free Antivirus 7.0.1474

    Pros

It did catch some well hidden (though probably inactive) viruses, though those could possibly be false positives.

    Cons

    Huge, slow, crashed computer.

    Summary

I've now tried all three of the major free antivirus programs (Avast, AVG, and Avira), and this was by far the worst. I used Avira for a long time but it got progressively more bulky and was slowing down my computer (plus I was getting sick of the popups) so I decided to switch. I put AVG on one computer and it was fine, and decided to try Avast on the other. Big mistake. It's huge (260Mb compared to 110 for Avira and 90 for AVG), slowed down everything even more than Avira, and then gave me a BSOD crash twice when I tried to install AVG. I finally just removed it before the AVG install and everything is working okay.

    "Very nice AV software"

    December 12, 2012  |   By aidan0203

    Version: Avast Free Antivirus 7.0.1474

    Pros

Very fast, does not consume a lot of RAM while on the background (my previous AV almost took about 400 MB of RAM while in the background on my Windows 7 laptop).

    Cons

    None at all.

    Summary

I highly recommend this completely free software to anyone that needs it. Great work Avast! :)
