"Low detection rates."
Version: Avast Free Antivirus 7.0.1466
Pros
Nice interface.
so many features available.Cons
low detection rates.
Summary
I used avast a year before but changed to avira due to its low detection rates ( av comparative and av test)
I don't know whether they are only focusing on it's features and forgot that avast is actually an antivirus software.
really disappointed.
I may consider avast if they improve their test results in av test and av comparatives. -
"Compared to McAfee or Norton....TEN Stars if I could!!"
Version: Avast Free Antivirus 7.0.1466
Pros
So far so good. Does not seem to bog down my computer like both McAfee and Norton...and Computer Associates did.
Cons
The Jury is still out...will let you know as time goes on.
Summary
Go ahead and give this one a try! I'm very happy with it so far...as I said, it doesn't seem to slow my system down...like the others.

"Good but not quite brilliant"
Version: Avast Free Antivirus 7.0.1466
Pros
It does a good job of offering protection against obvious threats and rogue software. It has a nice interface and one which is not too confusing. The free version is all most people would need. The best thing about it is that it runs with the minimum of fuss and without hogging up too many resources. It is certainly a far superior product to Norton Antivirus, far, far, superior to Macafee and infact better than 99% of all other antivirus products.
Like I said, the free version is all most people would need, so why pay for Norton? You can set the program so it deals with viruses silently or with minimum intrusion or with maximum notification. I always use Avast and recommend it.Cons
To be properly protected you need other anti-malware protection. Although it will pick up most viruses and malware, it isnt going to detect the most sophisticated root kits and also sometimes fails to get rid of the most sophisticated viruses and key loggers.
BUT HAVING SAID THAT, I COULD HAVE SAID THE SAME FOR NORTON ETC.
always use a combination of antimalware software. You only need 1 antivirus program, Avast, but also use root kit detectors and specialised malware removers and detectors such as hijackthis.Summary
THE BEST ANTIVIRUS PROGRAM OUT THERE !
But still not the only antimalware software you need -
"Very satisfied"
Version: Avast Free Antivirus 7.0.1466
Pros
Well designed interface -- all windows are re-sizable so there is no need to view settings crammed into a tiny window.
Easy email integration supporting ssl encryption.Cons
Slightly buggy interface, but much better than AVG which I found unusable.
Summary
After trying McAfee and AVG, Avast wins hands down.

"AVAST most effective, productive out of 8 AV's tried."
Version: Avast Free Antivirus 7.0.1466
Pros
Exceptionally quick to recognize threats and block them from the system. Nice interface that tracks security history and show where to be confident and where to be careful. Will conservatively prevent possible threat with unusual behavior by encapsulating it until it has determined it is safe. Scans are fast, even when selected for slowest, deepest and most time consuming full scans on 1TB drive using a 2006 dual core with just 2GB ram. Excellent and reliable, confidence inspiring, transparent use of CPU.
Cons
None. AVAST FREE better than the majority of antivirus available and better than several paid versions as well.
Summary
Have used Microsoft Security Essentials: terrible resource hog, slow scans, doesn't respond to threats before they cause problems. AVIRA not compatible with some common software and AVAST beat out AVIRA 80% of the time and is exceptionally fast when browsing internet. AVG, while good at one time, has been set upon by its own problems with routine installations (read reviews). Can AVG protect your OS if it can't install on a plain, properly updated Windows XP Home/SP3 32-bit system? Norton AV very good but costs $$$ and uses more resources. Threatfire, Comodo, Malwarebytes, Ad-Aware all tried. AVAST responds faster to immediate threats than all of them.
Full scans, +60 GB at deepest level take 30 minutes. Quick scans +20 GB at deepest level take 11-12 minutes. Has found viruses in Microsoft Updates, Hewlett Packard Updates, System Restore Points, on the System Restore "D" drive, updates to existing software such as Advanced System Care, Firefox, Adobe Acrobat, Verizon e-mail, Hotmail. AVAST FREE, when set to do a thorough job, does a VERY thorough job and I've been able to access websites that are known threats without harm. Boot scan identifies software problems before they mushroom into an unbootable computer. Extraordinarily competent protection for a FREE product. When we recently bought a high-end Win7 64-bit 4-core (11.2Ghz) 8GB memory 750GB hard drive laptop with video card and Blue Ray, we chose AVAST protection.
Bottom Line: AVAST FREE has a light touch on your system while responding much faster (than other AV) to threats. AVAST reliably updates in a few seconds several times a day. Combination of AVAST, Firefox browser, and Web of Trust has resulted in no time lost since January 2011. Other AV remain dormant and passive while AVAST vocally and visibly announces a threat and has already contained it in a sandbox where it can do no harm.
Finding infections in a scan, the measure of most AV ratings, while important, is not as important as finding the infection when it first enters the computer. In this regard, AVAST may be the best AV you can install. The depth that you select for the scan has a lot to do with its "rate of discovery" in a scan and AVAST learns and gets faster each time it scans. When a problem is detected, it adjusts to the possible presence of additional threats until it runs clean a few times. AVAST learns! Superb!

"Needs tweaking, but great free anti-virus overall"
Version: Avast Free Antivirus 7.0.1466
Pros
A lot of options for adjusting settings to your liking.
Boot scan does some great work.
Windows Firewall works great in combination with Avast.Cons
A lot of decompression bombs with password protection.
Because of this, you need several anti-malware/adware programs.
I would suggest using malwarebytes, superantispyware, AVZ antiviral, TDSSKiller and Dr.Web CureIt 7.0 Beta.
And maybe Winpatrol together with Avast in the background and read closely, only have maximum 2 programs running in the background (so avast+winpatrol for example).
Avast does not turn windows defender off at default like MSE does.
So my advice is to manually turn windows defender off.Summary
First let me tell you i'm not a computer wizkid and never did any school for fixing computers (hardware and software).
But i love to experiment with programs and sometimes replacing hardware myself with the help of youtube walkthroughs.
I think inexperienced users don't know anything about false/positive detections (avira for example finds a lot of false/postitives) and i can tell you that Avast is a strange anti-virus program if you don't know anything about certain settings.
With standard settings, avast is not scanning accurate, some files cannot be scanned because of decompression bomb and PUP (potentially unwanted programs) is auto disabled with avast.
So my suggestion is to adjust certain settings to your liking. (search with google for enabling and disabling certain settings).
The weirdest thing about avast is that he scans more accurate during a boot scan than during a scan from windows/desktop.
And in windows when you right click on a folder and click on scan is also more accurate than manually selecting folders & drives and scanning from avast program itself.
Like mentioned before, Avast needs to be tweaked in order to really function properly.
I would suggest casual users to turn on PUP through residential shield settings and also to scan there pc with avast boot scan.
This anti-virus really needs some work, but it's a great free anti-virus once your adjusted the settings to your liking.
Some people are mentioning that avast slows down pc, but it's not slowing down my pc.
In combination with Ashampoo Win Optimizer i just have a fast OS and Anti-virus program.
There is only one question from my side, so i hope your guys have the answer.
What happens after expiration date? will i be asked in 2013 to buy pro version or keep free version so it will extend my free avast account to 2014? -

"non stop harrassment"
Version: Avast Free Antivirus 7.0.1466
Pros
don' tknow any, all other anti virus programs do the same
Cons
constantly pops up "reminding" you that your free accoutn will expire.
it caused my computer to die black and blue screen non stop
when I finally decided to "uninstall" it was still there.
Had to go to their web site - reboot in safe mode - the uninstall - and finally reboot normal. Only I am not a computer whiz, took me a day and a half to figure all this nonsense outSummary
That company wioll never see a dime of my money
