"Great Program But Too Many Options."

    July 29, 2012  |   By gogospeedboy

    Version: Avast Free Antivirus 7.0.1456

    Pros

The interface seems nice and fancy. Im sure its a great program and a great piece of software.

    Cons

Way to complex for my small mind and short on time life style. The uninstaller was somewhat deceptive and confusing, but I'm sure that's deliberate, because their trying hard to keep whom ever they can from uninstalling their software.

    Summary

Great program and may be perfect for a number of people, but for me it was to much to operate and maintain regularly... I need something a bit simpler.

The interface seems nice and fancy, but way to complex for my small mind. I'm sure the program is a great piece of software but on my ranking system, I would rate avast free version a 7 out of 10.

The uninstalltion process was somewhat deceptive and confusing? Just my opinion.

"OK as far as I can tell"

    July 29, 2012  |   By markjenk

    Version: Avast Free Antivirus 7.0.1456

    Pros

Except for the tool bar stuff the install was pretty standard.

Seems to be working but didn't find anything on the first scan.

    Cons

Of course I never like the attempts to install tools bars but can accept it for the free software.

After it was installed and set up it said 365 days left, which bothers me since it didn't say what happens in 365 days, does it stop working, make you install an upgrade, what?

    Summary

I have never used Avast but heard it was pretty good. In the past I always used AVG when I needed free anti-virus for someone. This time had to have a current full download as the system appeared to be infected, it had been running with no anto-virus and no Windows updates for almost 2 years, so I wasn't about to put it on my network. Problem was I couldn't find a full download of AVG, so I got one of Avast.

    "User-friendly, FREE!, and thorough."

    July 28, 2012  |   By dragrace4fun

    Version: Avast Free Antivirus 7.0.1456

    Pros

-This program isn't memory-intensive as Norton, McAfee, etc. are. They are good programs, but they will slow an older computer down drastically when it comes to RAM usage.
-Ease of use is a big factor here; the controls are lain out for the novice consumer and though the freeware has limitations on what's included, they're--in my opinion--minor. Easy to navigate, does its job well...'nuff said!
-Catching what a paid version of Norton never did was a surprise to me. This FREE program caught TONS of spyware that my PAID Norton 360 allowed through somehow, numerous registry errors, and back door files (that allow access to your computer without your knowledge by a remote computer...like what hackers and the law agencies use, for example) plus a Trojan horse file. All I can say is, wow.
-This program keeps itself up-to-date and checks at log on with an internet connection.

    Cons

-Connection to the internet for updates every time you log on to your computer will cause some slower start-up time for you. I ran this on XP, now on Windows 7 with a newer computer, so it's no longer an issue. I was on a 7+ year old laptop using Windows XP (SP3), current on all my driver/software updates, and Norton crashed the computer, basically thanks to lack of memory or the capability to upgrade it past 512 MB PC-133. Avast would run fine on this same computer, minus the initial log-in drag when it checked for updates.
-I really have found no other bothersome cons to this program, especially since it's FREE!

    Summary

I like the program, think it would be best for the novice user, at least gives the feel of a thorough program to protect your computer, and it's easy to use. It clears more than most paid anti-virus programs, and pairs well with Advanced System Care 5 at the time to keep everything running smooth. It gets a 4.5 out of 5 from me as I believe there is always room for improvement, and the freeware doesn't come with the full share of goodies, but not everything can be fully-loaded and free, right? Hope this review helps those considering the download. I also believe that if nothing else, freeware should be on your computer to keep this virus/spyware/adware bombardment under some control...why wouldn't you? Protect yourself!

    "Recommended"

    July 26, 2012  |   By Rattz

    Version: Avast Free Antivirus 7.0.1456

    Pros

    - Easy to use
    - Does the job
    - Free

    Cons

    - Recommend disabling the voice alert; its very annoying.
    - Updates often; recommend disabling update pop-ups in settings.

    Summary

I've used this for a few years now and I have never had reason to regret it; in fact, I can only think of one virus that broke through it and my firewall in all that time and it was easily dispatched.

The user-interface is very easy to use, as is the ability to customize your scans. The quick-scans are mostly unobtrusive and can be set to run on start-up or you can schedule boot scans. The full system scans can be modified to be as deep as you feel necessary, though depending on your computer size they may take some time to complete.

Free version includes many of the features other programs only allow in pro versions, including real-time mail, web, p2p, im, network, script, and behavior shields. You can also enable browser plug-ins, site blocking, and run new suspicious programs in a sandbox to avoid contaminating your computer. If you are a gamer, you can also enter Avast into Gaming Mode.

Generally unobtrusive, as long as you disable the updated pop-ups from showing since Avast seems to update its virus definitions pretty often (or checks for updates or something).

    Definitely a good find!

    "It's a great free antivirus/malware software!"

    July 25, 2012  |   By swbono

    Version: Avast Free Antivirus 7.0.1456

    Pros

It catches many virus' and malware and puts them in quarantine, so you can research them.

    Cons

The problem is being a free software there many other hits that I received about corrupted libraries and files when I ran one of your competitors paid software. I guess its the nature of the beast! It would be more enticing if it would Dig deeper to catch more of the virus' and malware.

    Summary

For a free software virus' a paid one, I guess you get what you pay for, but its great that AVAST is professional enough to give a choice just the like the other software companies.

"Avast Free Antivirus (only free for 30 days trial)"

    July 25, 2012  |   By rahinnahom

    Version: Avast Free Antivirus 7.0.1456

    Pros

Though download and install are quick enough Avast's custom install does not clearly involve a sideload option.

    Cons

Contrary to the review and claim that this is a free version of Avast, once the download is completely installed, it indicates that it will expire in 30 days.
