Used to be the best - period.

Used AVAST FREE for years. Appreciated that very much. It used to be a great program. I very strongly dislike their 'new' approach of FORCING a free trial that includes services I do NOT want! I uninstalled AVAST and will use other free antivirus solutions. Too bad. I will miss it.

It was free and worked well when working. Glad I found out before I spent money here.
Cons
If you have problems they expect you to be a programmer to try and repair. Then when you have been through their fix it yourself process and try to turn in a ticket for some reason it won't recognize your registration. So now I am stuck with this crap on my computer and it won't uninstall.

Couldn't configure it to stop scanning archives and multi-media files.Summary
While my computer was dying of infections, AVAST's bureaucratic slow scanning and persistent approach of going through harmless file types (jpg, avi, mp3, wav, flac) wasn't a lot of help. Its boot-time scan is unaffordably snail paced.
Network shield had no effect on the incoming attacks (which was the source of my vulnerability).
It did recognize infected files upon deployment fairly quickly and took care of them most of the time. Interface and stats are helpful while more customization options are needed (for scans).
It loads fast and doesn't seem to hinder my work like many other antivirus programs so I am overall very thankful for this free product, however I still cannot rely fully on this and will look for other options.
If you are not infected, get this for a reliable background protection of the file system. But if your computer has a virus, look elsewhere for a solution that is not just effective but also faster. -

I'm currently using avast beta 7.0 and I am suprised with the performance. The new cloud service is outstanding. avast deserved to be no 1 in cnet ranking. Go avast!!

Be wary of the sandbox when you install it.

Switched to Avast when AVG started needed half a gig of RAM to run and started deleting random files off my computer without permission.
Avast has done all I've needed it to do. -

needs to add spam filtering

its a neat little product easy to use and doesn't conflict with other programs and the sand box feature is great but needs to be able to switch off with specific products that the user decides instead of switching off completely and losing the feature, and spam filter comes at a premium
