I had a badly infected computer using Virgin free, I swapped to Avast free a year ago cureing three viruses, one had drilled down very deep, and it's kept me safe since.
Cons
WinXP and Internet Explorer or some Addon seems to try resisting Browser Cleanup, it warns that some Addons may not be identifiable, rather worrying that I might have a rogue addon but everything seems to purr along without any problem.
Summary
I don't know of a better choice for the free experience of being kept as near perfectly safe as possible.

It has a very small impact on the performance of the PC except sometimes during a pattern update. After running Avast! for 2 years I installed and scanned with Malwarebytes and it found NOTHING. Avast! FREE had kept the machine 100% clean.

Once in a blue moon a virus will slip through but then this also happens to ANY PAID versions of Virus Detectors

IMO...I can trust that I am well protected with Avast Free. I currently use it on all 4 of My PC and My other devices, like Android Phone and Android Tablets, because they continually keep their program and their virus definitions update. I will even recommend it to Family and friends whom I help with PC problems. The easy interface of the program lets even a newbie No Program is absolutely perfect, but Avast free come pretty close.

Many modules and levels of protection. I haven't had any problems with malware or virus evils when the sheilds are activated. Avast isnt as bloated or resource hogging like AVG, Norton or others and of course the price is right.
Cons
Some fale positives (not very often) but they are corrected quickly with updates.
Summary
Ive used Avast for many years, before it was cool and #1.

Checks for viruses, AFAIK.
Cons
New set of popups for programs that "need updating", and for self-updates are obtrusive, un-needed, and annoying.
High false positive rate (for AutoHotKey scripts, AutoIt scripts, etc).Summary
Used to be great.
Current version is slow, has a high false positive rate, and has a bunch of intrusive popup notifications. :( -
