"Best free anti-virus software out there!"

    December 4, 2014  |   By luke.mason.560272

Version: Avast Free Antivirus 2015 2015.10.0.2208

    Pros

This anti-virus is standard when I'm setting up a new computer. I run a very small tech business fixing computer problems, and when I do a tune-up, this is the first thing I install so I can stop dealing with Windows Defender and run a full scan. Amazing, light protection that hasn't failed me yet. I installed it on my grandparents' laptop, which usually collects tons of malware when they use it, and when we came over for Thanksgiving recently, the computer itself looked very clean. The browser was a different story, but of course, an application can't prevent you from downloading toolbars and such. Overall, very impressed with Avast. I'm definitely a fan.

    Cons

The usual stuff that comes from a free application as good as this one. An inexperienced user might get frustrated when updating Avast, as it's easy to click "upgrade" in big, bold, blue letters, instead of "update" in tiny, gray letters. This could lead to confusion over whether they have to upgrade, and how they can stay free.

    "It does protect"

    December 3, 2014  |   By TomRay120

Version: Avast Free Antivirus 2015 2015.10.0.2208

    Pros

    I haven't had any viruses

    Cons

Avast tries to sell too much other stuff and has their own popups. I purchased their Grunge Fighter once and it didn't work and I didn't get my money back either so be careful.

    "For free, it's the best"

    December 2, 2014  |

Version: Avast Free Antivirus 2015 2015.10.0.2208

    Pros

Always notify me of suspicious files and websites, before I even consider whether I should trust them.

    Cons

The free version is not the best when it comes to removing malware or a virus. I like to think of this software, as your first line of defense. At least, you should know what malicious stuff infiltrated your computer.

    Summary

I heard the premium version is lackluster, but I can't complain about the free version of this software.

    "It was it all"

    December 2, 2014  |   By saull28_

Version: Avast Free Antivirus 2015 2015.10.0.2208

    Pros

The FREE version has the 5 protections you need: anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-rootkit, autorun.inf protection and sanboxing unknown processes protection, other "free" version security software only give you 2 of them at best, most of them just 1, the anti-virus; the only exception is COMODO Internet Security.

    Cons

The 2015 has VirtualBox which when installed/upgraded it will create a temp file of about 1.8 GB to create a virtual environment and makes the applications unstable, and takes only 1 core to do it, which takes about 1 hour to finish instead of using all my 4 cores, even the GPU could help on some calculations if possible, anyway I found this when I was trying to defrag after the supposedly installation was over, the file is created in 'System Volume Information' directory/folder, and neither Avast! nor VirtualBox will tell you what's going on. This wasn't an issue on 2014 ver.

    Summary

Still EXCELLENT, but Avast! really needs to address that background problem and make it go away and post it's status on the system tray at the beginning and when the mouse hover it.

"Good Free Protection - but had problems @ Updates"

    December 2, 2014  |   By daves1646

Version: Avast Free Antivirus 2015 2015.10.0.2208

    Pros

Free basic antivirus with middle of pack to higher protection quality
    Have a mobile device version
Low overhead/drag on PC; mobile version is hard on older phones
    Automatic updates of definitions

    Cons

Ads are becoming frequent and 'vocal'. Now a requester pops up finding programs slowing function of my PC and recommends a for-cost program for me to purchase.
Repeatedly asks me do d/l the mobile version for my devices even though I already do use it.
Had problem with a version update corrupting my Win 8.1 PC. Almost had to reformat/re-install to get my system to work again. Be sure to have a fresh System Restore point before any program updates or ...
Mobile version is hard on older phones (uses a lot of resources notably slowing email d/l and browsing)

    Summary

Good free antivirus with program version available for mobile devices.
Protection quality is good but overall quality has slipped with ads becoming frequent and obtrusive.
Need to guard for issues on install / updates or could have a bad outcome. I got lucky and managed to fully uninstall in Safe Mode and got my system running well enough to clean up corrupted files / sectors on drive.

Version: Avast Free Antivirus 2015 2015.10.0.2208

    Pros

It's a free utility, gives your pc a protection and notifies of malware. It just doesn't catch everything.

    Cons

Hope it can catch all malwares that invades your pc.

    Summary

    So far, so good!

"Great program. Free while keeping the nasty's at bay!"

    December 2, 2014  |

Version: Avast Free Antivirus 2015 2015.10.0.2208

    Pros

Free, easy to use, great for any level of user.

    Cons

Some times the pop up notifications can get annoying but its giving you fore warning that the website your browsing could be bad news.
For those still stuck in the stone age on some computers like me, Avast seems to slow down XP, but we are talking an OS that is many years old so what can you expect?

    Summary

I recommend Avast to every one. I have used the expensive programs that you have to pay to use and they still don't even compare to Avast Free version. I have been using this for 10 years with no issues. When I do a fresh reboot OS install Avast is usually the first or second thing I install after the updates.
