    "Its STILL internet explorer"

by Jorlwind on May 9, 2006

Pros: I like the interface, its great that the package includes skins.

    Speed is good.

Helluva lot better then normal IE

almost all of these features can be gotten for firefox through extensions...

    Cons: Lets break it down.

Avant is what is called an IE shell.

An IE shell is just a package that adds more features to your IE

Why is IE so bad you ask?

IE has a poor rendering engine(its why its fast, this engine makes it harder for website developers and makes it impossible to read some sites fully) and even though avant covers ActiveX/Javascript(which aren't active as a default) controls when a new weakness appears in IE(as it always does) your broswer is still at risk, and your still at risk against Spyware.

although its alot better then just normal IE Firefox/Opera are more secure, and since with firefox you can get all of the same features(and more) and its a open-source project..

In the end Opera and Firefox are still king, and Avant is just a shiny peice of software.

This browser does almost nothing against spyware, after checking it out I found several things on my system, with firefox I go to the same source and after checking its not to be found.

before you go about saying that firefox is so great I suggest you and everyone else to read this hxxp://mywebpages.comcast.net/SupportCD/FirefoxMyths.html

No, even if you go through and plug up some of IE's security flaws Its STILL at risk. Take for instance one of the lastest weaknesses found where IE can be redirected with no notice to a hostile website(this is known as PHISING and it costs consumers millions) and because avant is IE its at risk to this! further more IE is a huge unstable peice of bloatware crap! Avant just makes it prettier.

and have we forgot my mentioning of the BAD RENDERING ENGINE? The same engine that makes it harder for website developers and prevents much of the site from being properly loaded? (ever see that little 'done, but with errors' message on the bottom corner? yeah, you know what i'm talking about. or the 'Page cannot be displayed' thats all IE's Rendering engine!

lets return then to 'you can fix IE's security problems' I've already gone through fixing IE once, and it BITES. why crawl through the tangled interface of IE and look at all the sites and forums needed to fix Microsoft's mistake when I can Download Firefox and be done with it forever?

Look at the facts next time. Avant is merely a carpet over microsoft's crap browser. BUT IT STILL SMELLS

I disagree with your comments about Avant (and IE) being more vulnerable than Firefox or Opera. It just takes common sense and a little savvy (which can be found in most PC mags or PC forums) to make IE, and therefore Avant, safe.

I've almost used IE and/or Avant for the 4 years I've been online, and I've had no problems.
