"Fantastic scripting tool and development environment"

    February 13, 2005  |   By condoman

    Version: AutoIt 3.1

    Pros

Full featured utility scripting language. Now has GUI environment so you can build small apps that help you get your job done easier. Needs no installation, compiles to exe, Uses SciTE editor although not required.

    Cons

No support for manipulating binary files by design. On rare occasion I need this and wish it were part of the language.

"A must have, but sometimes ugly support"

    February 12, 2005  |   By MaryJolie

    Version: AutoIt 3.1

    Pros

AutoIt is easy to learn, easy to use, easy to revise, runs compiled (encrypted) or uncompiled, its free, and for the most part its Open Source. While you must understand some basic programming, such as decision structures, program flow, etc., you do not have to be a real programmer to create a script. There are even some existing scripts that can write some of your script for you.

While AutoIt3 is touted as a Windows Automation Tool, it is truly much more, and it continues to grow at a aggressive pace. We can count on its creator, Jonathan Bennett, the sideline developers, and the many loyal users, to continue adding functionality to this already incredible program. The next major release is expected to contain COM support and Regular Expressions.

    Cons

The major fault with AutoIt is the attitude of some of the "power" users and open source developers on the AutoIt forum. Some have absolutely no tolerance for new users unless the Newbie (their favorite word) can demonstrate they have studied the AutoIt help file for hours, perhaps days. This behavior only discourages the newcomer, and does nothing to promote AutoIt. It's too bad, as those same people are very talented and have much to offer. It would be better for them to not respond if their response is not of a positive nature (but, I'm afraid a few actually enjoy being rude and ugly).

For goodness sake, do not, under any circumstances, ask a question that was already asked. Even if you search the forum as best you can, don't make this mistake. You will likely receive an offensive Chat Acronym telling you to Read the #'~&*$! Manual. So, how do you know when it is safe to ask a question? You don't!

The nasty folks seem to forget that they too were once new and probably made stupid mistakes or did not have the time to study the manual. On one hand, they work hard to make AutoIt very powerful, while the other hand goes out of it's way to discourage new comers.

My suggestion if/when you receive a nasty reply is to simply ignore it. Do not respond in any way other than to say "thank you for your help". Otherwise, your post will get all clogged up with non-sense and you'll never get an answer. Let is alone, and someone will guide you in the right direction. Be patient while waiting for a reply (keep playing with your script) as not all of the nice folks are always on-line (the nasty ones are always lurking and reply immediately), so it may take a couple of hours.

"Excellent program - Easy to create programs/scripts quickly"

    February 12, 2005  |   By J.West

    Version: AutoIt 3.1

    Pros

I use AutoIt to automate repetitive tasks and have found it extremely useful. It is easy to create full, self-contained .exe files quickly. • I have not posted on the AutoIt forum, but I have gleaned some great ideas and scripts to get me started from it. • A must have, IMO, for use with AutoIt is the SciTE editor (Scite4AutoIt3 is available under the download section of the AutoItScript website). It is also freeware and makes creating and editing scripts easy.
