Never more worry about your trial period or buying commercial sound editors. Audacity more than satisfies most peoples needs. It is shipped with Mandrake Linux - that should tell us something. Audacity is now the tool of the trade, the industry standard of wave editors. Thank you, open source movement!!!

A truly amazing product. Very stable, extremely fast. Feature set is well above average out-of-the-box and can be expanded easily via plug-ins. The app is obviously not as broad in features as its expensive competitors, like Sound Forge for example, but it has some unique abilities that are unrivaled by anyone at any price. The multi-track editing interface offers a level of creative freedom that is lacking in other more automated programs. Only one complaint about Audicity - its Label Track feature is pretty good, but could be made so much better by simply changing the label marker to something that allows a bit more precision. The marker in the current interface is a flag shaped object and the shape and size of the marker make it really difficult to accurately determine marker or cursor position.

Summary
Does what it says "on the box", with an added unbeatable bonus in that it's free. The help files are comprehensive and excellently written. There is also a first-class manual (html) that is a picture of clarity and a model for any would-be manual writers to follow. If there is any complaint it is that the wma format isn't supported; but that is really just nit-picking about what is, in essence, an excellent product. Although it is free, it is no slouch. It is clearly superior in all the important areas to many of it's competitors (who are more than happy to take your money!!).
