Version: Atlantica Online 6.6
"Innovative MMO Mashup"
Pros: Tactical combat provides enjoyable and interesting gameplay; the world is fascinating, beautiful and unabashedly Eastern (huge plus); AutoWalk is brilliant for the casual gamer; lore is interesting
Ultimately, it's just fun to play, and it's free.Cons: Some translation glitches, some visual glitches (perhaps based in translation strings), slightly obscure crafting system, curious lack of some customization options (like mercenary gender and a wider array of character visuals)
Summary: I'm a sucker for a good tactical combat game. MMOs have unique promise in world building. This quirky little game grabs the best of both, and throws in a few other interesting elements. It plays almost like a Suikoden/Tactics Ogre/WoW mashup, and somehow manages to be very casual friendly in the offering. It's free, and fun to play. I could nitpick about a few things, but ultimately, it gives better value than most of the MMOs on the market, and would do so even if it were a subscription game. There are apparently microtransactions in the game, but I haven't found them yet, and I don't need them to have a great time.
I hope that it never does change to a sub model, but that it can even stand toe to toe with the giants of the genre and come out on top in sheer fun factor is testament to great game design, art direction, and smart business. I anticipate spending many happy hours with Atlantica Online, and I hope for a very long life for the game, and many kudos for the creators.
