"Works well on Netbooks... for the most part."

      May 27, 2010   |   By JasCarver9

      Version: Aston 2.0

      Pros

Attractive themes, customization options , low file sizes on themes, etc.

      Cons

Well the start menu is a problem on a small screen but its a machine issue because of the 10.1" screen and not the software.

      Summary

I received this version for free through the site GiveAwayOfTheDay and decided to install and use it. I found the text, and the overall desktop experience to be a lot better then the boring Windows 7 Starter desktop offered. A big plus about this software is that under Windows 7 Starter, you can actually use this program to change the background to whatever you like. On the home page of Aston 2, It looks like there are only 4 pages of skins present to take advantage of the new features of this version but I expect more to come in the future. The install was easy, and so is the interface. I may purchase an actual license in the future once it comes out again to give it another try. But for what I was offered, it was just right.

      "Nice explorer replacement"

      March 03, 2010   |   By Thomas-new

      Version: Aston 1.9.6

      Pros

I used this sw for for couple years and I have good experience with it.
Lighter than explorer, takes less RAM, Provides much better look(if you use some nice theme) than classic explorer shell, includes lots of useful features (sidebars,...)

      Cons

Aston is quit difficult to configure, I think that many users actually dont understand this sw (see previous reviews ;) )

      "I didn't care for it"

      January 21, 2009   |   By jim63135

      Version: Aston 1.9.6

      Pros

      not really sure

      Cons

I like to hide my desktop icons and I also didn't care for the themes, most were for kids and gamers if you ask me.

      Summary

I just didn't care for it. Couldn't see paying $30 for it at all. I was shocked there were no reviews on the product or pictures before downloading and installing to find out I didn't like it.

      "Worth It"

      November 29, 2007   |   By drummin2dabeats

      Version: Aston 1.9.5

      Pros

This is an awesome program. I used it on my Win98 and I can make it look like it has vista. The fact that it replaces "explorer" is a decent idea. Sometimes it is faster than explorer. Thousands of themes to choose from from the Aston Website. Based on Video Game Consoles, OSs and much more. I got the full licensed version from giveawayoftheday.com for free a couple months back.

      Cons

However, sometimes it is slower than "explorer". I have had days when it will crash, but that is usually when I use a very complicated theme with many plugins, and after all I am using it on Win98.

      "Pretty Cool Tool"

      September 18, 2007   |   By johnrpan

      Version: Aston 1.9.5

      Pros

This gives you an interface much like the high-end UNIX workstations. You can also download different themes from vista-skins.com and get the same look and feel by changing the Vista theme or skins on your desktop.

      Cons

Kind of confusing to learn how to use it.

"I can't recommend this product highly enough!"

      December 17, 2006   |   By TatianaM

      Version: Aston 1.9.2

      Pros

      1. Aston lets you customise your desktop to suit the way you work.

      2. It gives you several alternative ways to access your programs, using pop-up and drop-down menus, as well as tabs.

      3. Its shell swapper utility allows you to switch between Aston and Windows Explorer shells quickly and easily.

4.There's a huge choice of different eye-candy themes downloadable from the Astonshell website, each with its own arrangement of icons and buttons. You can even design your own! Or customise the four themes provided by default.

      Cons

      1. Accessing system tools such as disk defragmenter from the Aston desktop is difficult, so you should either switch shells or download third-party utilities.

2.Some of the reviewers here complain about difficulties with uninstalling Aston.

Make sure you switch back to windows explorer first, then you'll have no problems at all!

      3. Aston desktop doesn't show Windows Explorer icons. This may be alarming at first, but all the programs you had desktop shortcuts to can be instantly accessed from the Desktop Shortcuts menu item. I find this arrangement very convenient and easy to use
