CNET Editors' review
In addition to being tucked into a very user-friendly package, this full software suite comes without a price tag. Though many of Ashampoo Burning Studio's features are related, it's still absurd to think about doing this much in one program. Just about anything you could want to do with or to a CD, DVD, or Blu-ray is possible.
Ashampoo Burning Studio welcomed us with a nice interface. Burning, ripping and every other feature this program has to offer are well organized in a helpful menu. Simply choose the feature you want and Ashampoo Burning Studio walks you right through the process. If something goes wrong or you make a mistake, the program will automatically notify you and explain some potential fixes. Though experienced users might not like this level of hand-holding, it's awesome for rookies. The software doesn't output to a ton of formats, but it does give you the option of creating .iso files, which is a nice touch. The only downside is that the program repeatedly tries to install a toolbar to your browser and entice you into buying the full version. Though that alone might scare some folks off, it's not enough to ruin the program.
Ashampoo Burning Studio offers too many features to pass up when it comes to burning discs. The program isn't customizable, but people who aren't tech-savvy will appreciate the clean interface and helpful hints. More experienced users might want to avoid the program and find something that isn't so frustratingly simple.

"Does what it says but read everything in the install!"
Version: Ashampoo Burning Studio Free 6.81
Pros
Small app for Windows 8
Simple and easy to use interfaceCons
Tries to install other toolbars and search engines
Making backup Audio CD's seems to take for everSummary
Be very careful when installing this software. It defaults to installing unwanted items but you always have the option to turn of the auto install. This just reminds us to ALWAYS read what we agree to in the install process of programs. Use the custom install and remove the check marks for the unwanted changes. Nothing happens without your knowledge if you actually read the instructions.

"Be Careful"
Version: Ashampoo Burning Studio Free 6.81
Pros
It works well for burning and finalizing all types of disc formats.
Cons
Installs unwanted programs without your knowledge.
Summary
I wanted a more extensive program for burning discs. After installing Ashampoo Burning Studio, I burned a few test discs and every thing went well. The program performed as stated. However, after I later opened my browser, I discovered that Ashampoo had changed my settings, including installing it's own toolbar. I have been fighting a a loosing battle to get everything back the way it was. I guess even free comes with it's price.

"Not worth it"
Version: Ashampoo Burning Studio Free 6.81
Pros
I didn't keep it long enough to find out
Cons
installs at least 4 unwanted programs with download
Summary
the number of stars is a reflection on my opinion of a program that installs unwanted, unneeded and unannounced BS toolbars and trackers onto your computer when you download this program.
It wasn't hard to figure out how to use it but for what I wanted, it didn't work. I wanted something similar to the DVD burner program that came with Windows Vista but I cannot yet figure out or find on Windows 8. This program was not for me. -
"Audio great, does FLAC! but video DVDs PitA"
Version: Ashampoo Burning Studio Free 6.81
Pros
This is the first freeware I've tried that successfully burnt an audio CD from FLAC. Five stars for that, but
Cons
Minus half a star for inability to burn a video DVD in one step. (For that I recommend Sothink Movie DVD Maker, also available on CNET.)
Summary
Pretty awesome unless you need a one-step video DVD burner. Grains of salt: I am, obviously, pretty lazy, and am just cranky that I can't find one free download that does every single thing I might ever want. Admitting my unrealistic expectations, this is a great program.

"Good Software"
Version: Ashampoo Burning Studio Free 6.81
Pros
Ashampoo makes previous versions of their software available free with they upgrade to a new version with more or better features. This is not crippleware.
Cons
Nothing major. Beware of C/net's advertising software in the installer.
Summary
I have dealt with Ashampoo for many years. Their software is always good. However, there is usually better software available. But they always pack a lot into their software, so you always get your money's worth. Their prices on their latest software is negotiable. However, the software that your purchased last year from them will probably be free this year. And they may have a new version to purchase a month after you purchased your version.
This is an older version of their software so it is completely free and not crippled in any way.
In general, this a good and fair company to deal with. I recommend this company's products and software.

"I like it!"
Version: Ashampoo Burning Studio Free 6.81
Pros
It's everything I need.
Cons
Maybe it's too good as a free version when they are trying get us to upgrade to the paid version. Just my opinion.. :~D
Summary
Easy to use, I prefer it over windows. No problem when I'm adding files to a disk that is already being used. Windows always gave me problems, stating that the disk was already full when it wasn't.

"What's the problem guys?"
Version: Ashampoo Burning Studio Free 6.81
Pros
Burning is great, easy to use and FREE! Yes, you are prompt to buy Ashampoo 11 but that's normal for a free software which a paid version is available.
Cons
Ask's to install toolbar several times but not a big fuss. Had slight issues burning files to a 8.5GB DVD but not sure if software or DVD.
Summary
Great burning utility, alternative to Nero.
