"V1.7 released and a BIG step forwards - but only if you register"

    April 21, 2008  |   By Mohlar

    Version: Artoonix 1.7

    Pros

At last, tweening has now been implemented in Artoonix. Although this isn't of the same vector-graphics type as found in, say, 'Anime Studio' , 'Tweenmaker' or 'Express Animator', it works very well, especially for the movement and rotation of objects along straight or curved paths. This saves a HUGE amount of time.

When used as a way of morphing between diffent or altered shapes, a ghosting effect usually happens, but this can easily be turned to your advantage and isn't necessarily the problem that you might think it is. AND, of course, there is the inescapable fact that Artoonix offers an extremely powerful entry point into the world of traditional animation at very low cost indeed.

Also, with v1.7, several tweaks and improvements have been made to the ways in which files can be selected and re-used (eg: the facility to now easily block-select .ipa files instead of having to check each image one by one).

A few users seem to feel hard done by because tweening is only accessible to registered users of Artoonix - but this is surely a selfish and short-sighted view. The cost of registering is very low AND the developers did offer unregistered users the chance to register for v1.7 at a reduced cost for several weeks before it was actually released. This software is, after all, being developed as shareware and as such nobody can justifiably claim that all the most powerful functions should be given away free of charge. And tweening IS a really powerful function in Artoonix.

    Cons

There is increasingly little to dislike. The advent of tweening has really opened up the potential and power of this program.

For me, the drawing tools fall short of true vector-style graphics, but once you become familiar with how they work, they aren't too much of a worry.

The biggest and most noticeable weakness seems - for the moment - to be in the inexplicably low activity of the Artoonix forum. Judging by submissions into the Artoonix gallery or Youtube, there are more and more people using the software and yet hardly anyone contributes to the forum. This is a shame as the developers are usually quite quick to respond to feedback and suggestions and users seem to be missing the chance to influence some of the ways in which Artoonix will develop in the future.

So if you try it and like it - PLEASE JOIN IN WITH FORUM DISCUSSIONS.

"V1.6 even better than 1.5 ----- HIGHLY recommended."

    March 11, 2008  |   By Mohlar

    Version: Artoonix 1.6

    Pros

My previous detailed review of v1.5 still holds true, but with v1.6 comes the facility to input and manipulate text. The tool is more versatile than most (just as is the sound function). Text can be entered and, if needed, words or individual letters can be modified by changing font or size or both - all within one operation. If subsequent frames need the same text to be placed in the same position, there is the option to click on a bar and hey presto - it happens. Or, of course, you can save the text as a separate file and import it as an object. Both options are useful for titles or effects.

In the next version, the Artoonix team hope to implement tweening.

I heartly recommend this software to anyone who wants to explore and exsperiment with animation. If you search YouTube for 'Artoonix' you will find a growing range and variety of animations.

    Cons

There are a few minor niggles that I have flagged up in the 'Suggested Features' part of the forum, but on the whole, the software is remarkably light on major flaws.

"Excellent way to start exploring class 2D animation techniques"

    October 20, 2007  |   By Mohlar

    Version: Artoonix 1.5

    Pros

For anyone who wants to explore classic 2D animation without spending a fortune, there is probably no better program to start with than ARTOONIX.

I have been using Artoonix for several months and it is MASSIVELY more versatile than you might imagine from the simple demo that comes with the download. It can be used for the most basic and simple animations - even to the level of animating scribbles - right up to much more complex work where onion-skinning, imported images and intricate animation can be developed. Even more astounding - the way in which sound can be imported and edited within the program is a revelation. It is superior to most other animation software in this respect.

Don't expect anything as professional as, say, 'Anime Studio' or 'ToonBoom', but do expect to be surprised once you start to experiment.

Visit the two galleries that can be accessed via the homepage. There you'll find examples of everything from stick-figure and blob animation to much more evolved work.

There is also a forum which contains several walk-throughs. As word spreads about this software, expect the forum to become much more active and dynamic. The development team also seem to be quick and keen to answer queries or respond to suggestions.

    Give it a try.

    Cons

The menu and control icons take a little while to learn and they are rather small.

The drawing tools aren't the best, but they do work and there ARE a very good range of controls over line thickness and opacity.
