A good, fast file converter is a handy thing to have in your PC toolkit. ArcConvert is a small, flexible, free tool that is completely portable, so it can travel along with you on a USB drive or other portable device or media.
ArcConvert converts 7-Zip, ACE, ALZ, APK, Arc, ARJ, BEL, BH, BZ2, CAB, DEB, DZ, GCA, GZ, HA, HKI, IMP, LFB, LZH, MSI, Noa32, PAQ7, PAQAR, PMA, RAR, RPM, RS, SPL, SQX, TAR, TGZ, UCL, UHARC, YZ1, YZ2, Z, ZIP, ZLIB, and ZOO into 7-Zip, ACE, BGA, BZ2, CAB, DZ, HA, HKI, LHA, Noa32, PAQAR, RAR, TAR, TGZ, UHARC, YZ1, YZ2, and ZIP.
We unzipped ArcConvert and opened its compact, efficient interface. We browsed to a zipped file, selected the conversion priority from a drop-down list, and chose an output file type from another drop-down list. We chose TAR GZ for novelty's sake and pressed Convert. A pop-up message notified us of a successful conversion, noted that the new archive was smaller than the source archive, and asked us if we wanted to delete the source file. We didn't, and the program saved the new archive in the same folder as the original; we were surprised to find no way of changing the destination folder. ArcConvert automatically detects passwords for protected files, but it also has a field for entering passwords manually when the autodetect doesn't work. The main window displayed a log view of the task. Unfortunately, there's no Help file, and the program's Web page didn't have much beyond some basic information and broken links. More information or assistance is needed, but nevertheless, ArcConvert proved speedy, effective, and easy to use. We think it'd be a great little tool to have around when faced with unusual file types.
