Some of the best things about Windows 7 are the window-management tools under the Aero umbrella. Aero Snap, Aero Shake, and Aero Glass do nothing less than make Windows 7 competitive with Apple's Mac OS X Snow Leopard on the window management front. They pop visually, they're fun to use, and most importantly, they're useful ways of managing windows. But that doesn't mean you can't tweak them, and for people who want more out of their Aero, there's AquaSnap.

AquaSnap gives users fine-tuning control to change the Snap/Shake/Glass functionality, customize the Aqua features, toggle at will between Aero and Aqua, or disable them. Where Aero Snap makes windows resize as maximized or to half the width of the monitor, AquaSnap adds in quarter-screen sizes. There's also a custom option, and it's multimonitor compatible. For some odd reason, the Snap features required a reboot before they worked, when the Shake and Peek ones didn't.

AquaShake changes Aero Shake from minimizing all other windows to making them transparent. Users can toggle the transparency level and the shake sensitivity. AquaGlass actually doesn't change or improve on Aero Glass. Instead, it makes windows transparent when you drag them around the monitor. You can adjust the transparency here, too, but this is most useful when you click and hold on a window to quickly see what's beneath it. A useful but not killer feature.

AquaSnap is an excellent customization tool that works well and didn't add any noticeable drag to system resources. You can change whether it runs on start-up, and AquaSnap can also be used to port the Snap/Shake/Peek features to legacy Windows systems, where the program is likely to be most useful.

"Used to be good until version 1.6.1"

April 23, 2012  |  By bkonig

 |  Version: AquaSnap 1.1.3

Pros

more options than windows 7 default docking

Cons

They took multi monitor support away from the free version. Do not upgrade to v 1.6.1 if you have dual monitors. Uninstalling this product today!

Summary

was a good program until the developers got greedy

"Adds Good Windows 7 Functionality To XP and Vista"

May 21, 2010  |  By mistertee

 |  Version: AquaSnap 1.1.3

Pros

Allows Vista and XP users to enjoy several of the best features from Windows 7

Cons

Program is still in it's early stages. Subsequent releases may introduce probs. For example, V 1.1.3 worked perfectly on my Vista x64 PC but V 1.2.0 caused several programs to generate Runtime error messages. Reinstalling previous version fixed it.

"Massive disappointment"

April 27, 2010  |  By staigerclock

 |  Version: AquaSnap 1.1.3

Pros

Can turn off AeroShake. Allows windows to go transparent when you drag them.

Cons

Wipes out the Aero shortcut keys and the "maximise vertically" feature of Aero.

Summary

We all like to criticise Microsoft for their UI design, but products like this show just how difficult it is to effect a genuine improvement on a UI.

Even when AquaSnap is set to use W7's own AeroSnap (rather than the new AquaSnap features) it disables the shortcut keys for placing a window vertically along the left or right side of the screen (Win key + right or left arrow). If you are a dual monitor user this is a SHOWSTOPPER because there is no mouse manouevre for doing this essential action.

Here is a great sequence for opening two Exporer windows side-by-side in W7 (ideal for managing your files):

1/ Hold down the Windows key
2/ Press the following key sequence:
E
left arrow
E
right arrow
(Then release the Windows key)

You can open up your two side-by-side Explorer windows in less than two seconds. Aquasnap wipes this out, EVEN IF it is set to use the standard AeroSnap functionality.

It also disables the "expand vertically" mouse manouevre, where you drag the top edge of a window to the top of the screen and it expands to fill the screen vertically (but not horizontally).

Finally, some of the settings don't seem to work without stopping and restarting AquaSnap, or maybe rebooting. I'm not sure exactly what is going on, but the best workaround seems to be:

1/ Stop AquaSnap using a right click on the System Tray icon
2/ Adjust your settings
3/ Start AquaSnap again (from the Start menu)

Here's the bottom line: IF the writers make the following changes:

1/ Restore the Win+... shortcut keys
2/ Restore the "drag top edge to fill vertically" feature

.....then it would be a great tool and I'd give it five stars. Right now, I'm just about to install it because those two are show-stoppers for me. Hence one star.

"A Must Have!"

April 26, 2010  |  By Mikki Crose

 |  Version: AquaSnap 1.1.3

Pros

Loved being able to see what is open under the current window with the transparency feature.

Cons

Still getting use to this feature, but there wasn't anything that I didn't like about it.

Summary

Really liked being able to look at the page that is opened under the current window. I always have numerous pages open and this allows me to sneak a peak without tabbing to the other window. Awesome new toy that I'll get plenty of use out of.
