"Not quite perfect, but almost there"

    December 12, 2011  |   By smartymarti

    Version: Apple Xcode 4.0.2

    Pros

A noticeable improvement from the last version, and has a bunch of nice features.

    Cons

I wish the IB assistant was a little more solid than it is, and the code completion is erratic from time to time.

    Summary

I was glad to see the improvements they made on this latest version of Xcode. The LLDB still needs a little work, but it's getting there. Overall, this is a really solid product, and we use it frequently here at our business. As an IDE,Xcode does really well. It does a great job uniting the iOS and OS X toolchain in a single environment, but it does have it's fair share of kinks to work out.

It is absolutely idiotic that we have to keep downloading the entire 1GB disk image just for minor version upgrades.

    Version: Apple Xcode 1.5

    Summary

It's nice to give helpful advice about how best to download such a big file from an (understandingly) busy site, but lay off the *censored*ing already. App won't do this, app won't do that, downloads too slow, Apple should fix this and that etc..

Sure, I had download problems too, but I got there eventually. The point is it's a GOOD app, it's FREE, it produces finished apps FAST, and generally runs rings round the third party apps I was forced to shell out big money for prior to xCode and Interface Builder!!

How 'bout a little gratitude to Apple for making this suite available to us in the first place, and channeling your frustrations into building good OSX apps and kicking some Windoze butt. Which leads me to ask when was the last time Bill Gates gave YOU something for FREE?

    "Great review."

    Version: Apple Xcode 1.5

    Summary

This is a great review of an incredible programming tool. My only complaint so far is that I can no longer use CMD + B to build my project. Appart from that Xcode has been improving in stability and product quality enormously since it's initial version.

Personally I find the editor window on the build results and such quite a nice addition, as those who don't want it can easily hide it. To me, it is nice to be able to check the error locations within the same window.

A recommended upgrade to those using earlier versions.

Yay - Apple made some *great* changes to this new version of XCode. I was rather disappointed after the first release... but this one is great! Thanks Apple! Keep making great development tools to encourage people like me to write great software for your platform!

    Version: Apple Xcode 1.1

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
If you use Xcode, you need this update, period. It doesn't break anything I've noticed, and it fixes countless bugs that were in version 1.0.x. Native targets used to be useless to me due to their bugginess; now I can upgrade some projects to native and not have anything break.

Still, some people may not like how Java and AppleScript targets don't yet have native target support. But at least the legacy target system still works...
