"It's 1.0 - great start but needs more"

    June 23, 2003  |   By Hangnail--2008

    Version: Apple Safari 1.0

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Small resource footprint. Based on opensource technologies. Not too much to complain about for a 1.0 release. Doesn't work on some advanced document management systems requiring heavy XML use. Gecko platforms are faster and seem more mature. This browser will surely grow but for advanced work, Mozilla is still the staple.

Well all i can say is the day Explorer (since dev has ended) no longer works in the MacOS my browsing days will be over! What the hell are they thinking... the preferences for this thing are - well what preferences!?! Java still has hella errors even after installing the just released (dev only preview) update for v1.4.1! HATE the buttons! and WHY OH WHY OH WHY CANT YOU TAB INTO LINKS ON PAGES! I have had to go back to the days of ergo arm wrestling with a wretched MOUSE!
ABSOLUTELY NOT WORTH IT! for a tiny speed difference! please... I HATE Microsoft but hey they have done a dammed good job with MAC software these last few years! APPLES OS X is SUPERB! But i must say they need to get out of the Application market cause these iAPPS are aweful!
    there i am done

    "Online banking"

    June 23, 2003  |   By pedaler

    Version: Apple Safari 1.0

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
still no access to on-line banking. At least as far as Suntrust Bank is concerned. Returns 404 error when trying to move around inside secure site. I'm not changing banks so I can use Apple software. This problem has existed since the first Safari beta. I have sent continuous bug reports to Apple to no avail. No big deal since Camino and Mozilla both work flawlessly and I like the way Mozilla handles passwords better than the keychain anyway. I just would have been nice if they would have fixed it.

"Safari getting stronger but missing important things"

    May 13, 2003  |   By mfix--2008

    Version: Apple Safari 0.9

    Summary

This review was originally posted on VersionTracker.com.
Safari v73 is an absolutely great Browser already, but still missing some important features.
    BOOKMARKS: names do not work
    - if you save a bookmark and give it a name/title, you can't type this title and get to it (you have to know the URL and type this one, in order for the autocompletion to work). WHY, Apple ? This way you don't need to bother to give and remember a name (IE on OS9 & OSX does this since ages).
    - if you save a Bookmark it always goes to the "Bookmarks Bar", this is not very convenient, because it's quickly overloaded. Usually I would like to have it in another folder. If You change folder, Safari doesn't remember after quit/relaunch.

    PRINT: no information
If you want to save a page as PDF file (which is a VERY convenient thing) and choose FILE/PRINT and then click "Save as PDF"
    - you get an "Untitled" Document instead of the real title, which is annoying.
    - this "Untitled" document does not have an URL, DATE, PAGENUMER or anything which would identify this page on the printout or PDF file.
    - there should also be a page preview.

DOWNLOAD MANAGER does not even show the download URL, time, etc !!!

All this features are standard in IE since ages, hope Apple isn't forgetting about it, because all the Users switching from the old default IE are missing it.

It's a good browser. A great browser. The integration with Address Book is a fine feature. It's slim and well integrated with the OS (as it should be). I dig it.

    "Excellent"

    Version: Apple Safari 0.9

    Summary

Safari is fast, reliable, renders most pages without problems and comes from our favourite computer company. But having said that it still has some way to go to reach the same level as Camino. But I am sure it will come very close. :)
