After 10 years and with millions of users worldwide, Apple's QuickTime player still provides one of the best solutions for digital media. Whether you're watching streaming movie trailers online or diving headlong into QuickTime as a creation platform, you'll find little to quibble about in this veteran player.

Its few quirks are quickly offset by the elegant Apple interface and the top-notch audio/video playback quality. QuickTime 7 comes in two varieties. The free standard player handles popular audio, graphic, and video formats, including the much-ballyhooed H.264 and MPEG-4. Also, for $29.95, you can upgrade to the content-creation-friendly Pro version, which adds features such as full-screen playback, easy editing, H.264/MPEG-4 production, and the ability to save movies from the Web.

MPEG-2 support is available, but at an additional cost of $19.95.High-definition content looks impressive with the new H.264 codec, but hardly better than with similar offerings from Microsoft. The stylish transport controls and the friendly layout work well. Inclusion of the autoupdate and automatic-network-detection features make getting started and staying current easy.

Overall, QuickTime 7 continues to be a must-have for anyone surfing the Web or looking to experience the best in digital media.

"What were CNET editors thinking?"

August 04, 2011  |  By therev

 |  Version: Apple QuickTime 7.6.9

Pros

It's needed to play some video formats. It's free. It doesn't have viruses or eat your dinner when your back is turned.

Cons

It hogs resources.
For years qttask has inserted itself into my startup folder - resisting many attempts to disable it.
It isn't as good as other players.
It's foisted on us by Apple.

Summary

Perhaps I've been a bit harsh with two stars - but why did CNET give it five? Other players are much more user friendly and less intrusive. For all Apple's complaints about Flash, their own software isn't exactly peace, love and happiness ...

"More problems than any other program I've ever used"

May 18, 2011  |  By glest-omega

 |  Version: Apple QuickTime 7.6.9

Pros

Needed for many programs to play MOV, M4A, and other files (ew, dependencies)

Cons

Extremely sluggish compared to the VLC media player, which supports more file types anyway, slow start-up time, given me so many problems with a naught uninstaller and various errors that occured over time.

Summary

If there was an alternative that other programs that use quicktime as a dependency, I'd take it in a second. Would not recommend for use in playing. As for downloading MOVs, not only are MOV's a minority on the internet (using flash video works better, and is the most common choice: eg, Youtube) and there are better ways to download that doesn't make you use quicktime. Apple, your iPods are great, but your software needs work, and your customer service, frankly, sucks.

"Only have it because it's bundled with iTunes"

February 25, 2011  |  By bubbamoore

 |  Version: Apple QuickTime 7.6.9

Pros

None that I can see !

Cons

A resource hog that occasionally freezes up.

Summary

I rate several other free players over this one , if iTunes would work without it I'd uninstall it. It takes a long time to start and sometimes freezes up on startup when playing media outside of iTunes.

February 23, 2011  |  By krazzeeman

 |  Version: Apple QuickTime 7.6.9

Pros

If you have the pro version you can download mov files from the internet
and it does have alot of options...

Cons

doe's seem to use more cpu power then windows media player
doesn't support avi files (they need to fix this)

Summary

win7 media player will play mov files, but it wont save them off the internet
quicktime free version doesn't either
you need the pro version, but I think it's worth it,if your having trouble with your player send me a e-mail I'll try and help,I have the pro version and have no problems at all

"Once Downloaded, can't access"

February 02, 2011  |  By Darkwolf1957

 |  Version: Apple QuickTime 7.6.9

Pros

Can't see any Pros at present... can't get it to even recognise my Win7 machine.

Cons

After spending $30 for this Piece of S&*t, I discover that Apple has NO usable Support line... even to get my money back. This is why I'll never buy another Apple product (the iPhone is cool... but I won't go further).

Summary

This is simply THEFT. Apple sends you on a run-around, trying to convince you that they CARE about shoddy apps, and after 8 hours, you find you're still high and dry as to answers. I can't help but laugh at Apple Folks, who think their Machines are "User Friendly"... I've never wasted so much time trying to get a Paid-for App to work.

"Absolutely horrible"

January 17, 2011  |  By jedi8625

 |  Version: Apple QuickTime 7.6.9

Pros

Can play protected files purchased from iTunes...and that is the only thing that is nice about this program

Cons

Uses about 50% more of my cpu then when watching the same video on other media players. Not to mention when you first open the program it takes forever to open, and feels short on features compared to its competition.
