Editors' Review

OpenOffice has come a long way after racing to improve its compatibility with Microsoft Office. If you're looking for Microsoft-caliber applications for free, OpenOffice has alternatives to Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access, and more.

Pros

Free: The most significant feature of OpenOffice is that it's free -- no subscription fee, no lump sum, no upsell to a pro version. If your business needs don't include complex word-processing or database-management features, then OpenOffice is a bargain.

Compatibility: OpenOffice supports the same file formats as rival programs like Word and Excel. Those coming from Microsoft will be pleased to hear that Office files work in OpenOffice, too.

Function: For most basic uses, OpenOffice holds its own. Math allows you to create basic charts and cell-dependent calculations just like Excel, and most useful features from Microsoft Word also appear in Writer, including spell checkers and most text-formatting options.

Cons

Not for heavy Excel users: Expert spreadsheet manipulators will find it hard to live without compatibility with Visual Basic for Applications, especially if your macro functions depend on Microsoft's environment.

Poor presentations: If you create the most basic of presentations, Impress will suffice. But PowerPoint holds a large lead when it comes to variety in designs, templates, transitions, and collaborative features. Though OpenOffice can open PowerPoint files, don't expect the transitional effects to import.

Bottom Line

Apache OpenOffice vs. Microsoft Office: The question isn't which suite has better features (that's Microsoft's), but rather whether the open-source suite has enough features for your work. Microsoft offers affordable pricing for Office 365, a subscription model that puts Office on just about every device you can imagine. But if you're looking to save a few bucks and don't need all the fancy support of Office, then OpenOffice's core offerings will get the job done.

"It's fairly OK"

May 10, 2014  |  By ooprobs

 |  Version: Apache OpenOffice 4.0.1

Pros

It's free and works most of the time with little, non-demanding projects.

Cons

It doesn't work all of the time. Crashes frequently. (Switched to LibreOffice and seems to work a little better. Both have the same base code--very similar.)
Problems with copy/paste (doesn't copy all that was highlighted).
Problems when two windows of the same document are open (causes the program to crash).
Problems when more than two documents are open (causes the program to crash).
Problems when attempting to work on big projects (causes the program to crash).
Probs with Base connecting to database (won't connect ODBC or JDBC, won't recognize the jar file).
Problems with password protecting files (will make password protected files into read-only files and make it impossible to edit them--the file does not appear as read-only in file explorer; but only appears as read-only in OpenOffice).
Probs when reporting a bug (a ticket opens and a reply is given. The email of whoever replied is invalid. Messages sent to it are undelivered. Issue unresolved).
Lots of bugs I hope they can fix.

Summary

Though supposedly compatible with Word, it does not display a .doc/.docx file the way the file is displayed in Word, especially if the file contains pictures (it moves them around on the page).

However, even with all the problems it has, I prefer it to MSOffice. It's ridiculous to charge so much. If they were smart, they'd lower the price and welcome more customers instead of encouraging people to walk away to other platforms.

Glad it was picked up by Apache and upgrades are being released more frequently.

"Its a basic WP based on the old Windows Word 2003"

May 01, 2014  |  By Terry Gay

 |  Version: Apache OpenOffice 4.0.1

Pros

It works, it has basic text functions like find and replace.

Cons

I cannot get the spell check to work.

Summary

This alternative to MS Office works and it's better than Libre Office. Perhaps they should begin upgrading it to look and perform like Word 2007 that is being given away free, albeit with a lot of software you don't want and can't get rid of without disabling the word processor. Open Office is not like the advanced versions of Word, but it's free and easy to use. Have you looked at the price of MS Office lately? Geez Louise!

"Like it better than new MS Office"

March 22, 2014  |  By marycc55

 |  Version: Apache OpenOffice 4.0.1

Pros

It's free. It works like old MS Office. The ribbon takes getting used to. Watch when you download it. You don't have to install Conduit and other features. I also hate it when "free" software hijacks my browser and forces new programs, like a coupon club down my throat.

Cons

The only con is that it doesn't have Publisher. Fortunately, I have an old version of Microsoft Small Business Office and was able to download Publisher from it.

Summary

I would recommend it to friends and family. Microsoft should just lower the price on its software. It is ridiculously over priced given the number of Office Productivity alternatives. I considered the Office 365 option. But why give Microsoft more money. Use this and I think you'll be satisfied.

"Not so great ! ! ! ! !"

March 08, 2014  |  By patc135

 |  Version: Apache OpenOffice 4.0.1

Pros

It's Free. That's the only thing that Apache's version of Open Office has going for it. The ORIGINAL Open Office (before Apache took it over) was MUCH BETTER. I would really like to re-install the original version. Is that possible???

Cons

Is not able to copy/cut & paste properly. It always causes some kind of problem especially when attempting to cut & paste photos.

Summary

Very unhappy with APACHE Open Office

"Almost Perfect"

December 21, 2013  |  By GinnyLee8

 |  Version: Apache OpenOffice 4.0.1

Pros

Free
Adequate for most home use personal computers

Cons

When trying to change font size it crashed.
Cut and paste option doesn't allow the 'text only' paste option I'm used to having on Microsoft Office. It forces me to paste it in the format that's online.

Summary

I usually only use Writer so my review is specific to that.
One really big complaint and this isn't for OpenOffice, it's for the 'Add-ons' that the software download came with. I apparently approved some awful browser hijacker called Conduit Search to be downloaded with the OpenOffice as well as at least 10 other annoying add-ons like "Coupon Helper". Uninstalling the Conduit Search doesn't help. You need to go into your Control Panel for your internet connections and manually DISABLE the program. After you disable it go to your 'homepage' settings and reset it to the homepage you desire then click SAVE or Accept changes or ACTIVATE or whatever. Really a pain. Technically, Conduit is still on my computer but it's disabled. Next time I download free software I'll be more astute to the Add-ons and such that the software wants to install. (Notepad++ on Softpedia tried to install this Conduit so I cancelled the download and found it on CNET without the Conduit download) What a pain. But OpenOffice works just fine.

"I love it."

December 10, 2013  |  By gshawn60

 |  Version: Apache OpenOffice 4.0.1

Pros

It can recover Microsoft Office documents that Microsoft messes up and cannot fix. It does everything I need it to do. I also have it on my other systems besides my school systems as the only office suite. After my dads older Microsoft 2003 finally crashed, I upgraded his office with Open Office. He loves it, and seems willing to try other Open Source programs.

Cons

Add-ons seem to be harder to get and some features do work, but takes time to learn. Just like my Linux OS. This program really is better than most programs one has to pay for. Best part is that new versions are free as well. This is a good choice if one is willing to learn the advanced features that are simular to Microsofts.
